Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Now that September has arrived, I am reminded of how autumn is, in many ways, a time of transformation and growth. For many Asian and Asian American communities, the autumn season is a time to celebrate an array of cultural festivities with loved ones. One of the most widely celebrated is the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, also known as the Harvest Festival, which was observed on September 10th this year.
For the past 2 years, Walmart has continued to share the rich stories of the Mid-Autumn Festival with customers in select stores through beautiful artwork, creating murals made from recycled cereal boxes and beautifying the walkways with chalk art. Now, I am so excited to share what we have in store for you this year.
Walmart partnered with three Asian American artists to create sustainable artwork in one of our supercenters in Irvine, CA. On September 8th, customers saw each piece of art come to life, inspired by the artist’s personal experiences celebrating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.?Customers were invited to participate by coloring in Mid-Autumn-themed coloring book pages. 200 kits, including coloring book pages and art supplies from Walmart, were donated to Culverdale Elementary School.
Each piece of artwork was created on paper woven with wildflower seeds and using art supplies found in Walmart stores. At the end of the day, the artwork was gifted to the Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA), who will plant it and enhance green spaces in the Irvine community.?

Our hope is that this beautiful artwork evokes cherished Mid-Autumn Moon Festival memories for those who observe the holiday and provides a way for those who may not be familiar with the occasion to learn about the rich traditions!
Wishing all of our friends, communities, and associates a happy and healthy autumnal season!
All the best, Joanne Tabellija-Murphy
