Bringing Nature Back to Town - The IGA Biodiversity Green Roof

An exciting new Green Roof project can be found on top of the visitor centre of the International Garden Festival in Berlin. The German Roof Gardener Association, together with the Green Roof company fairplants-system GmbH, the green roof system manufacturer ZinCo GmbH and other cooperation partners, turned a 2,000 m2 roof area into a field of biodiversity experimentation. The roof landscape shows a mosaic of small mounds, gravel, sand and clay islands, temporary water surfaces, deadwood and nesting aids for insects. More than 70 plant species turn the roof into a colorful flower meadow. The different biodiversity modules serve as a blueprint to foster greater species variety in new Green Roof projects and upgrade already existing species-poor Green Roofs.
