Bringing in help
Russell Dalgleish

In our businesses we build teams.
We identify, attract and motivate the best talent available in the market to help bring our vision to reality.
However I believe it is not the team we direct that is the critical factor, it is the team we attract to share their wisdom and connections who are the game changers.
Typically these individuals are selected as board advisors who are available to provide advice, and guidance and to share their experiences. Thus helping us to avoid the myriad of pitfalls that affect every business.
Building boards is something I spend my life doing.
Working with businesses to not only attract and engage the best advisors I can find, from across the world but also ensuring that the business gets the best value from them.
However, ensuring your board is performing at an optimal level is no easy thing to achieve. These will all be successful individuals in their own right and take a certain skill to get value from. This is where a great chairman is essential.
"The work of a team should always embrace a great player but the great player must always work." Alex Ferguson
Here are my key points to ensure your board performance is optimised.
And please note it is never too early to appoint a board and advisors.

2. Are leaders born or made
The lad on the right balancing a parrot on his shoulder is me. I can assure you that until the age of twenty-five, this young man showed no evidence of leadership ability, at all, but within 15 years he was CEO of a London-based company with over 200 staff.

Remember, you run the business, the business doesn't run you!

For someone who prides himself in planning my week very carefully this week is going to be strange for me. I have been selected for jury service, maybe, hence I have to keep my diary clear.
In London later this month I am hosting a unique event on the Thames. Sign up here to join us.

5 个月Thanks Russell, great advice, and I would agree it is never too early to appoint a board and advisors, having just launched my company to manufacture and distribute a product that I've been developing for several years, I've spoken with several potential Board members, Wishing you the best for the jury service, I'm sure FSB can help cover any business losses incurred, Having been in the Army there's many born leaders and many made leaders the best gain respect and don't order it. I've penciled in Cruise Control at the moment, Onwards and Upwards have a great week,

5 个月Great article Russell. I know that my AM Bid business definitely benefitted from bringing in non-executive directors. I am now available myself to take on several non-executive roles, so will be happy to discuss this with anyone who would like to explore whether I could be a fit with their organisation.

5 个月Nice letter this week Russell, thanks for posting. imho leaders are rarely born but are definitely made. Training and mentoring are good vehicles for this. Organisations who think it appropriate to promote someone into their first team lead role based on their domain knowledge alone, and fails to provide quality leadership training for these folks, is missing a huge trick. They are also failing to give their fresh leaders the best start on their journey. Leadership at the top is important but no more or less than the ability of every leader in the organisation. Creativity is arguably the biggest under-used resource in many organisations. Modern vibrant leadership or 'disruptive leadership' is the key to both unleashing creativity in everyone and also a significant way to build 'modern vibrant and successful organisations'. The list of benefits that this drives is not small and well worth the effort in improving recruitment of leaders, and investing time and effort to train and develop good leaders throughout. To name but two; people will like their jobs and the organisation will prosper too! #leadership #disruptiveleadership Paul McCarthy
