Bringing #AI to #DUBAI
It seems there isn’t a day that passes where we’re not hearing about artificial intelligence.
The media is feasting on anything to do with AI. That’s expected - it’s a white-hot topic at the moment.
From Dan Brown’s latest blockbuster, to articles fearmongering about how AI is coming to take our jobs, and announcements on the UAE government’s aim to integrate AI into public sector services. From radio slots, to OpEds and online news feeds, it’s a veritable barrage of information about AI. I’m in the business and even I'm getting a brain haemorrhage trying to keep up
Faced with this media onslaught, most business managers can be forgiven for thinking that AI and its many wonders are the exclusive domain of large corporations, well-funded tech companies, governments and the super-rich.
AI must seem well out of the reach of their small or mid-sized organisations
What the media is forgetting to discuss is how the rest of us can get a slice of this action. How can SME’s benefit from Artificial Intelligence?
At OBOTEO, we’ve surveyed nearly 100 SME owners and managers across an array of industries. Their businesses range from F&B to real estate, and from transportation to asset management. We’ve found, unsurprisingly, that over 90% of them would like to benefit from AI but they don’t know how. They don’t even know where to start.
Fortunately, artificially intelligent tools can be acquired by all businesses, big and small. The benefits of intelligent automation can be just as easily attained by a single-office real estate brokerage as they can a multinational insurance company.
All that’s needed is the will to embrace technological change, a sound business strategy, and a dollop of data.
There’s one story that I love citing when discussing how the benefits of AI are within reach of all organisations, no matter their size.
It’s a wonderful use-case of a made-to-order pizza delivery company in Silicon Valley, California. The business has no outlets, just an industrial prep-kitchen. It delivers its pizzas using a food truck loaded with pizza ovens that bake the customer’s pre-ordered pizza while en-route to their delivery address.
Businesses don’t get much smaller than that do they?
The company uses all kinds of fun AI tools. My personal favourite is their use of a machine-learning algorithm that predicts the days’ pizza orders. This enables them to focus their budget on buying ingredients that they’ll need for the day instead of spending money on ingredients that will go to waste. Such a cool way to be cost efficient.
Dubai is the Silicon Valley of the Middle East: innovative, fresh, dynamic. We believe that all businesses in Dubai can be beneficiaries of the AI story, no matter their size.
