Bring Your True Self to Work

Bring Your True Self to Work

Hello Friend,

You've likely encountered the advice to bring your "authentic" self to the workplace. However, research indicates that only 16% of individuals feel comfortable following this advice, despite it positively affecting their performance by up to 85% (BeYourselfAtWork).

Being authentically yourself at work can sometimes create conflicts. Questions about acceptability, professionalism, love, and trust may arise. On the flip side, concealing your true self may lead to missed opportunities for enriching relationships in both your personal and professional life.

But how does one share their "authentic" self in a professional context and how can it be done intelligently and sustainably?

Consider viewing everyone you encounter as a human rather than just a work contact. While professionalism is crucial in work meetings, seeing networking and interactions as more than transactional can open doors to deeper connections. Speaking to others in a genuine and vulnerable manner fosters comfort and can lead to meaningful relationships that extend beyond the workplace.

Authenticity is a practice that requires time and intention. Active listening is a powerful tool in this process. Pay attention to details in conversations, such as passions, work, and challenges and follow up accordingly. Being an active listener helps identify individuals with whom you want to build deeper connections. Additionally, be generous with your ideas and connections, focusing on helping those you authentically respect rather than those who might take advantage.

You don't have to connect with everyone, as being authentic involves vulnerability. Setting boundaries is essential to preserve time, prevent burnout, and focus on relationships that bring joy. Not every person needs to see your vulnerable side, and it's okay to be selective in building deeper connections. Reciprocal relationships are key, so choose a few individuals to deepen connections with, based on mutual enjoyment and authenticity.

Ultimately, by focusing on and making space for these meaningful connections, you can seamlessly integrate your personal and professional life without succumbing to burnout, overwhelm, or anxiety. The power lies in creating your own communities, starting with the simple act of showing up.

Around the World of HR

Improving Productivity One Factor at a Time

"Man still hasn’t figured out how to add more time to the day. Therefore, the only way to get work done at your practice on a daily basis is to increase your staff's productivity." - Continuum

Increasing productivity is no easy task! Humans are by no means open books. So how do you help people bring their best version to work?

In the course, Becoming a Powerful Leader: Motivating People, Professor Walsh of Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration proposes that it lies in job enrichment. To take productivity up a notch, work on infusing a job with motivational factors. The factors include:

? Variety - Tap into people's brainpower. Understand their skills and how they approach work. Then, incorporate your findings into the job, allowing them to utilise their various skills, talent and cognitive abilities in performing the job.

? Control - Everyone desires some level of autonomy. When people have some decision-making power over how they approach work, engagement and productivity increase.

? Impact - When people know that what they do matters, they are eager to do more. Can they see how their work increases efficiency or how it contributes to the bottom line?

? Feedback - This involves both positive and corrective feedback. It requires a balancing act. The importance of feedback cannot be overemphasized. It gives people perspective and direction on how to approach their work.

Empowering people to unleash demands time, effort and consistency, yet the investment is worthwhile.

HR Balanced Diet

Book of the Month

Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World by Adam Grant.

In Originals the author addresses the challenge of improving the world from the perspective of becoming original: choosing to champion novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battle conformity, and buck outdated traditions. How can we originate new ideas, policies, and practices without risking it all?

Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports, and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognise a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, manage fear and doubt and how leaders can build cultures that welcome dissent.

The payoff is a set of groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and improving the status quo.

Bringing your true self to work can be somewhat tricky. It's important to note the type of true self required at a workplace while boundaries keep everything else at bay. Many thanks for sharing.
