Bring your A-“GAME” when facing difficult times: What traits make a team resilient?
As many of us face various business challenges, I want to highlight what I believe the most successful teams have in common: resilience! Resilient teams not only endure challenges but also emerge stronger, turning obstacles into opportunities. Here are the top traits that resilient teams share: Grit, a positive Attitude, a growth Mindset, and Empowerment.
1. Grit
Grit, a concept extensively researched by psychologist Angela Duckworth, is the combination of passion and perseverance toward long-term goals. Teams that exhibit grit are unwavering in their commitment to their objectives, regardless of the difficulties they encounter.
Grit is crucial for resilience because it drives sustained effort and consistency over time. Teams with grit are not easily discouraged by setbacks. Instead, they view challenges as opportunities to demonstrate their dedication and push beyond their limits. This persistent approach ensures that they remain focused and driven even when the path to success is fraught with obstacles.
Additionally, grit fosters a culture of endurance and hard work. In resilient teams, members are willing to put in the extra effort required to overcome hurdles and achieve their goals. This collective perseverance is a powerful force that propels the team forward, ensuring they remain resilient in the face of adversity.
2. Attitude
A positive attitude is another key characteristic of resilient teams. Positivity does not mean ignoring problems or being overly optimistic; rather, it involves maintaining a constructive outlook and focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on difficulties.
A positive attitude is infectious and can significantly impact team dynamics. When team members maintain a positive outlook, they inspire and motivate each other, creating a supportive and encouraging environment. This positivity helps teams navigate tough times with a sense of hope and determination.
Additionally, a positive attitude enables teams to approach challenges with confidence. Instead of seeing obstacles as insurmountable, positive teams view them as opportunities to innovate and improve. This constructive approach allows teams to take proactive steps toward overcoming difficulties.
3. Mindset
A learning culture and growth mindset are fundamental to the resilience of a team. Coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Teams with a growth mindset are open to learning from their experiences and view failures as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.

A learning culture encourages continuous improvement and adaptability. Team’s with a growth mindset regularly reflect on their performance, seek feedback, and make necessary adjustments. This ongoing process of learning and development ensures that they remain agile and capable of responding to changing circumstances.
In teams with a growth mindset, mistakes are not stigmatized but are seen as valuable learning experiences. This perspective reduces fear of failure and encourages experimentation and innovation. Team members feel safe to take risks, knowing they will be supported and that their efforts will contribute to the team’s collective knowledge and growth.
A growth mindset promotes resilience by fostering a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Teams with this mindset are more likely to embrace new challenges and persist in the face of difficulties because they believe in their ability to improve and succeed over time.
4. Empowerment
Empowerment is the final crucial trait for resilient teams. Empowered teams have the autonomy to make decisions and act independently within their scope of work. This autonomy enables them to respond quickly and effectively to challenges and changes, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility that enhances their resilience.
Empowered teams thrive on open communication and collaboration. When team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, feedback, and concerns, they can collectively solve problems and innovate. This collaborative environment builds trust and support, which are crucial for bouncing back from setbacks and maintaining resilience.
Empowerment also involves recognizing and leveraging the strengths of each team member. By valuing individual contributions and encouraging initiative, teams create a culture where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute their best. This sense of empowerment leads to higher engagement, creativity, and a collective drive to overcome challenges.
Wrap Up
Resilience in teams is not a matter of chance; it is built upon specific traits. The most resilient teams possess Grit, a positive Attitude, a growth Mindset, and Empowerment. As leaders, we have the opportunity to demonstrate and nurture these qualities. We can help our organizations develop teams that not only withstand challenges but also thrive by transforming adversity into opportunities for innovation and growth. In today’s fast-paced and uncertain business environment, these traits are critical for achieving long-term success.
Remember, having your A “GAME" when faced with difficult times is about embodying these traits and fostering them within your team. In doing so, you will have built a resilient team ready to face any challenge head-on!
