Bring on the hybrid working future

Bring on the hybrid working future

This week, there is cautious optimism in the air, after the government lifted its Plan B COVID measures and gave the nod to working from offices once again.

With many hoping that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, will this week finally mark the beginning of a fully hybrid future?

There’s been mixed emotions among workers when it comes to working from home. For some, it’s been the best possible opportunity to finally find some balance – whether that’s enjoying more time with family, for hobbies or thriving at work without the barriers the workplace can often present.

Others will be desperate to get back to the office. People looking for a slice of normality, to be creative and collaborative and, most importantly, to finally put the kitchen table back to its proper use.

As a business leader who is responsible for navigating the transition back for both of these contingents, I am incredibly conscious of making the right decisions for all of our people. If, like me, you’re working out how to go about it in the best way, here are some things to consider:

·????????Communicate internally – any major change to ways of working is an upheaval for employees. The best way to alleviate any worries they may have is to stay in constant communication with them regarding your plans and what’s expected of them

·????????Don’t assume, ask – hybrid working means something different to everyone. As we know, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, and lots of needs will have to be assessed. You can only know what your employees need if you ask them, so give them the opportunity to share feedback using an anonymous survey tool

·????????Get the right tech in place – one of the biggest worries I hear about hybrid working is around technology. What if I can’t make it work in two locations? Do I have to carry my laptop everywhere with me? Will I have remote access to the systems? Anticipate these questions and make sure you are properly set up to be (or are working towards being) hybrid friendly

·????????Stay flexible – as we’ve seen throughout the pandemic, the situation can change in an instant. Flexibility and the ability to adapt if things do go wrong is really important – make sure your employees know that you’re willing to shift things around to help them when needed

One thing I am really looking forward to in the office is having meetings and conversations with colleagues in real life again. Don’t get me wrong, I have been amazed by the freedom and flexibility that video calls have brought to our working lives over the past two years, but there’s something about sparking an idea whilst stood in the kitchen making a cup of tea that I just can’t wait for.

Good luck to everyone returning to the office this week and next. I’d love to hear how your experience has been and, of course, whether you have any more tips to share?

I am feeling Lifted ??
