During this Holiday season, let’s take a moment to reflect on the past while boldly looking toward the future with alacrity and optimism. Let’s take account of all we have to be thankful for and the hope for a more inclusive environment. To be the change we want to see requires a conscious effort, given all the distractions and competing priorities.
How do we handle each and every critical interaction to maximize our chances? My point of view is based on a simple concept. Let’s be kind to one another. We can disagree, challenge each other, even engage in congenial competition. But one thing is certain. We all do better when we get to know and respect each other. In order to give each other the benefit of the doubt we have to better understand each other’s values, even if we disagree or counter prioritize. In order for that to happen, we have to face the affliction that affects one out of very one-person, unconscious bias. If we can acknowledge our unconscious biases, which affects all of us, we have a chance to eliminate prejudgment and discrimination, which obfuscates our creative culture. This is not just an important staple in creating a safe and equitable workplace, but it is well documented that inclusion increases productivity, innovation, and better decision-making. William Kahn says that Psychological Meaningfulness, Safety and Availability of one’s authentic self is paramount when looking to create an engaged culture that I believe leads to an organization that embraces inclusion.
Diversity, in and of itself, doesn’t drive inclusion but polarization. Without conscious competence, enhancing structured experiences and accountability, sustainable change is unachievable. If an inclusive environment is made to be a priority, the litmus test is a feeling of belonging that is shared by all stakeholders. Let’s enjoy our holiday by practicing kindness. Then let’s bring that kindness with us into 2020… HAPPY NEW YEAR!
