“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” -Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs introduced the slogan, “Think Different”, at Macworld just months after returning to Apple as interim CEO, telling the audience “you always had to be a little different to buy an Apple computer.” He went on to say… I think you had to really think differently when you bought a Mac.
Some of you may feel ruffled after you read this, and some of you will agree with me. What I am going to say doesn’t fit for all. But darn it, it does fit for a lot of us.
In the spirit of transparency and sharing my heart with you, here’s what has happened in my world lately.
NOTHING! NADA! NOT A DAMN THING!
No shame, though. I know better, and now I’ll do better.
I am admitting to you that I have allowed myself to become paralyzed for the last week or so. For me…that means watching waaaay too much TV, (and I am not even a “TV person”), too much social media, not enough exercise, not enough conversations with PEOPLE, and too much of letting my thoughts get out of control. TOO MUCH SUGAR AND CAFFEINE!
TOO MUCH DATA! I mean, I love data, but I DO NOT need to check the CDC website 10 times a day, especially when it’s only updated ONCE every 24 hours.
Just for reference, here’s the definition of Paralyze:
-To cause (a person or part of the body) to become partly or wholly incapable of movement--
-Disable, immobilize, make powerless, incapacitate, debilitate, numb, deaden
-Unable to think or act normally, especially through panic or fear
-Bring (a system, place, or organization) to a standstill by causing disruption or chaos.

A rebel?

A Troublemaker?

(I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE, GOAT REMIX: https://youtu.be/-aLYvZ5sX28)
A round peg? Some of us may be getting rounder eating so much bread!...Just sayin’.
*YES! (I LOVE BREAD: https://youtu.be/ZtV9Vi6tSVk)
Have you always seen things DIFFERENTLY?
*FOR SURE. (COMPLICATED: https://youtu.be/5NPBIwQyPWE)
Did you answer yes to the above questions?
Really? Then what happened?
I am not making light of this horrendous healthcare crisis the WORLD is experiencing. Not in the least! I’ll repeat…No shame. When we know better, we do better.
I am still here.
You are still here.
I am still me and you are still YOU.
What can WE do, since we are isolated from other humans? Below, I am going to give you some examples, using me and my work as the example. Your situation may differ from mine.
For those of you in HR and/or Talent Management in your organization, you will easily “connect” with my examples. For those of you who don’t “connect”, please craft your examples, share them with me, and I will share with my huge network.
PLEASE Remember, these examples are to capitalize on remote working. I am NOT,NOT, NOT suggesting you work with people in person. NO, NO, NO!
(HELL TO THE NAW : https://youtu.be/2FEpVtve-vo)
I work in the talent optimization space. I help organizations with their humans. That includes selection, coaching, training, strategy, succession planning, high potential planning, exit planning, etc. ??
Note: all of the below works really well with a remote workforce, so have no fear. Again, I am not suggesting “in person” anything, rather the opposite.
(UNDERDOG IS HERE: https://youtu.be/7XRil07h5uE)
Selection – Hopefully you are still closely monitoring your applicant pool. The economies will rebound, and you will need employees. Hint, if you are using an applicant tracking system, assessment solution, or both, continue to do so. You can easily communicate to your applicants that the jobs aren’t available…YET. Why not be ready for the rebound, instead of having to catch up? Do you need an *ATS, or an *Assessment Solution offering unlimited usage? I can recommend (pro bono) the best solution for your organization. One shoe does NOT fit all. Just ask me.
(9 to 5: https://youtu.be/UbxUSsFXYo4)
Coaching – This is not the time to stop coaching your employees, or even delay it. Take advantage of the extra time you may find yourself and your employees with. Your employees will likely welcome the continuing or even the beginning of a coaching process. Do you need help deciding how to move forward with coaching employees remotely? Just ask me. I can recommend (pro bono) the best framework for your organization. (ROAR: https://youtu.be/CevxZvSJLk8)
Training – The world is your oyster as it relates to training. The are so many platforms available that enables most any training you want to with your employees. No need at all to stop or even slow this process. You just have to “think different.” Consider taking advantage of doing those team building sessions, those team facilitations, those round table sessions, etc., now. Especially now! Doing so will build trust with your employees. Doing this will solidify employee – employer relationships. Your workforce needs hope right now. Give them hope! Stay connected. Need recommendations on remote training needs? Just ask me. I will recommend (pro bono) the best solutions for your organization. (SEVEN NATION ARMY: https://youtu.be/0J2QdDbelmY)
Strategy – So your team would typically be involved in Strategic Planning during this time of year? You can continue. And so, you should! Need recommendations? Ask me. Pro-Bono. THE DISTANCE: https://youtu.be/F_HoMkkRHv8)
Workforce Planning: I am categorizing the below as Workforce Planning. They are all separate, with commonalities. And yes, if you’d like to have a conversation( Pro-Bono), just say so.
*Promotion and Succession Planning – This is work no one seems to ever have time for, except, you do now. You’ll be glad you did it when the world suddenly cranks up again. (IRREPLACEABLE: https://youtu.be/2EwViQxSJJQ)
*High Potential Planning – High Potential Planning sometimes get confused with Succession Planning. It’s similar in many ways, but NOT the same. We also struggle to carve out time for this. High Potential Planning, like Succession Planning, is complicated and needs intentional focus. (STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN: https://youtu.be/D9ioyEvdggk)
*Exit Planning – Were you getting serious about retiring or selling (or both) your business, before this healthcare crisis began? And now you are reconsidering? Well if you are reconsidering, you weren’t convinced, so in that case it’s good you may have put this on hold. On the other hand, if you are convinced the time has come to sell your business or retire, let’s get moving! Exit planning is complicated and time consuming. No time like yesterday to dive in. Lots to do, come on! (TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT: https://youtu.be/gj2iGAifSNI)
The entire point is that we must think different.
Embrace thinking differently and be ready.
Don’t panic, take lots of deep breaths, and keep moving forward. To do otherwise, is a huge kink in our logic. Don’t let the fear paralyze you; resist it at all costs. You may say that I am a dreamer, but we truly are in this together. (IMAGINE: https://youtu.be/YkgkThdzX-8)
Let’s end with the beginning:
“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” -Steve Jobs
