Managing Emotions

Despite demographic differences and cultural contrast around the world, humanity's DNA is 99.9% similar. The most common factor behind this similitude is irrespective of our race, colour, gender and creed, we (Alexa and Siri are from a different planets) have one thing in common, that is we are Emotional.

On a scale of pleasure and pain, the human body and mind respond. Rather all living beings respond. Scientist believes we experience any situation on the grid of valence and arousal. Valence is the degree to which we feel good or bad and arousal means the degree to which an individual remains calm or excited.

Basic understanding of human emotions:

The most widely studied types of emotions are of six types - anger, disgust, fear, happiness and sadness. A state at which human mind is aware managing emotions cognitively gentle is emotional balance somehow like attaining ‘nirvana’. Science says, you can manage your emotions in five different ways maintaining physical health, eating healthy meals, avoiding intoxication, a good slumber and by regular exercise.

To regain a decayed emotional balance never hesitate to ask help from others, talk to people on your feelings, getting physically active, back to daily routine and have a good sleep. Lots of people think emotionally balanced is a matter of luck only. Rather it means you have a healthy relationship with them.

Emotional Quotient & Intelligent Quotient:

Many times it is said men are from Mars whereas women are from Venus. Research papers tell us IQ is predominant in men and EQ in women. IQ tests measure the ability to solve problems using logic or communicate complex ideas. But EQ measures your emotions and uses them in taking decisions. But it doesn’t mean men have no emotions. Both are from the same planet, then why discriminate?

Learn to express your emotions freely. It’s no harm for your kids to see you crying or dancing in rain at the age of 60 or wearing purple at 80. Let this world understand, you are a human and you do have emotions.

Emotional Intelligence:

It is nothing but managing emotions intelligently. It is controlling your emotions in a positive way to come out from stress, communicate effectively, overcome challenges, empathize with others and avoid unnecessary conflict. It is never late to develop emotional skills,

1.??Try Journaling: After a hectic schedule day, write down tour views on the day spent. Where did you feel stress-free? What was most frustrating? How did you feel during the evening cup of coffee with your boss?

2.??360 Degree Assessment: To judge others' emotions, you need to understand yourself first. So try to self-assess. Evaluate your experiences and try to find out how better they could be. 85 per cent of Fortune 500 companies use 360-degree employee feedback for the betterment of their organization.

?

3.??Be Active Listener: Psychology Today, says only 10 per cent of people listen carefully. It’s very easy to get distracted by your hand phone or background noise or family issues. Yet to be an attentive communicator and emotionally intelligent leader first pay attention to others’ voices.

?

4.??Take Online Courses: Attend a webinar, online classes, and motivational speeches. Harness knowledge from others and then distribute it. Likewise, if you experience something to document it, if documented upload it, if uploaded share it. Remember knowledge has no use if it remains confined.

?

5.??Pay Attention To Your Emotions: First acknowledge you do have emotions and let the world be aware of them. Start it from your home. Hug your kids returning from the workplace, play with your pets, do some gardening, read some favourite novel, cuddle with your better half, spend some lazy weekend, and have some family outing.

Start today whatever is for the betterment of your emotional balance and self up gradation. Don’t wait for a new year to make a resolution, you have every Monday. Life is too short to find matching pair of socks. Colour it as vibrant as you can and do it now. Don’t keep your sexy lingerie in the closet to wear it in your sixties.

Universal true.
