A Brighter Future for Alaska’s Students: Free School Meals for All

COVID-19 taught us something valuable—when every child has access to free school meals, communities thrive. During the pandemic, federal funding ensured no student went hungry. Now, Alaska is working to make that progress permanent.

Rep. Maxine Dibert’s House Bill 12 would provide free school meals for all students, recognizing that hunger has no place in the classroom. Over 51% of Alaska’s students already qualify for meal assistance, and rising food costs make this support more critical than ever.

More than just food, this bill strengthens school meal programs to withstand future challenges. It also promotes local ingredients like salmon and moose, benefiting both students and communities.

Investing in school meals isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Let’s build on what we’ve learned and ensure no child goes hungry.
