Belgium provides leadership regarding daylighting for Residential Care Centre design. The Avondzon Care Home in Erpe-Mere, EAST-FLANDERS became one of the first senior care facilities to apply modern daylighting design techniques.
A fully electrochromic glass roof brightens the quality of life enjoyed by the residents.
The gathering place stimulates social interaction between elderly people which is important for combating angst and loneliness.
Opened in 1978, the building owners recognized in 2017 the urgent need for renovations. In 2019, Thierry Bauwens, Principal - Artec Plus Architecture, Welle, Belgium created a new addition in order to bring this facility in line with constantly changing standards and quality requirements.
The variable daylighting scheme offered less eye strain, providing more confidence for the residents with relation to their mobility concerns.
“Light can play a decisive role in preventing falls. Residents feel better, are more cheerful and fall less. These positive behavioral effects can lead them toward taking less medication, such as sleeping pills,” explains Katrien Thysebaerdt, general manager at Avondzon.
