Bright Spots: The power of a network

Bright Spots: The power of a network

Dear Educator,?

New ideas and connections are the basis for creativity and innovation. If we want to continue to evolve and create schools that meet the needs of all learners, educators need to connect with people in business, their community, other schools and districts to build networks that inspire new ideas.

This summer many educators are taking time to relax, which is extremely important. Many are also making time to grow professionally. It is important to rest but it can also be invigorating to connect, learn, and evolve with others.

With Gratitude,

Katie Martin, Chief Impact Officer,?Learner-Centered Collaborative

BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK

The Power of Networks.

Last week I had the honor of facilitating the final day of a 3-day book study on Learner-Centered Innovation in Nevada. It was so powerful to see state, district and school level leaders and teachers of diverse content and expertise come together and explore why change is necessary at multiple levels and also identify how they could work together to make it happen.

I asked for people to reflect on what they used to think and what they now think after spending 3 days connecting, learning and asking, “what if…?” There were many that alluded to the lack of isolation that they now felt for example:?

I used to think I was fighting an endless battle to change learning experiences for students. Now I think there are other passionate, excited, and forward-thinking educators fighting for the same.?

I used to think I was alone in wanting change. Now I think my network of changemakers will grow.

As the educators read the book and discussed connections, ideas and challenges they faced, they realized the opportunities that existed if they worked together and were able to look for ways to achieve their aspirations rather than just see the barriers. We improve when we open ourselves up to learning from others, share our ideas, and work together to make it happen. And when we improve, learners and those we serve benefit.

How might you make time to connect and explore the possibilities in your context? Share in comments.
