Wildfire Mitigation

As we leave the wildfire season in the US but approach the bushfire season in Australia, it's a natural moment for us in the industry to consider how we can mitigate wildfire risks. In Sense’s latest featured article with Utility Dive , Sense explores the role that grid-edge intelligence can play in helping identify risks before they cause damage.

Meet Hugh Chung in our new employee spotlight. Hugh is based in the US, as a Data Scientist/Signal Processing Engineer.

What do you do at Sense?

I work within our Grid Analytics team, using power data to identify and mitigate issues seen on the grid. Electrical faults, low power quality, and transformer overloading are just a few of the problems we're tackling. With Sense embedded in the electric meter, right at the edge of the grid, I get to work with both utilities and consumers to cut costs, improve reliability, and reduce carbon emissions.

What brought you to the energy industry?

I started in a fairly niche research area using very low frequency (VLF) electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields for imaging projects–kind of like x-ray for power systems. Turns out VLF E/H-field imaging is useful to non-invasively measure voltage and current in power cables, which got me interested in the energy space. Since then, I’ve been drawn in deeper as I’m constantly learning about new areas to make a meaningful impact.

How have advancements in AI changed how you solve problems?

Advancements in AI have completely reshaped what’s possible both at Sense and across the sector. Modern models and paradigms enable us to solve problems we couldn’t have imagined tackling just a few years ago. It’s humbling to work with such talented data scientists, constantly pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve. And with AI tools, I’m learning faster and accomplishing more with the knowledge I already have.

What’s a fun fact about yourself or something surprising you’d like to share?

In another life, I’d like to have run a café by day and a restaurant by night, blending my passions for coffee and cooking. For me, both are the perfect mix of science and art—rooted in fundamentals but fuelled by curiosity. And ideally, this café-restaurant would sit on a mountain so I could snowboard on powder days.

Netherlands Grid Congestion

In the Netherlands, grid congestion remains a critical challenge, with demand for connections exceeding construction capacity. Despite a record €8 billion in grid expansions, over 10,000 purchase requests and 8,000 feed-in applications are on hold. Beyond costly physical upgrades, smarter management of existing infrastructure is essential.

Grid edge intelligence, fed with high resolution data on next-generation smart meters is a powerful new scalable and cost efficient tool for grid operators. Providing real-time grid visibility to manage the grid, expand capacity in a targeted manner, identify overloaded assets as well as keeping operating and maintenance costs low.
