The Bright Side - Q2 2024

4 things you need to know before you select your next smart meter

Making an investment in technology is never easy. But when that technology is expected to last 15+ years, like smart meters, the stakes are much higher. After all, the energy transition will happen during the lifespan of meters being installed now. It’s a critically important decision. Make the wrong meter choice and you may not be able to adapt to the needs of the changing energy landscape.

It’s a lesson that is still fresh in the minds of utility decision makers after first-generation smart meters fell well short of their promises. And while there have been some incremental improvements to meters that have come to market since, a revolution in smart meter technology has arrived. AMI 2.0 has changed the role of smart meters from data collection devices to a distributed platform powered by software and capable of transforming how we manage the grid.

So what exactly makes a smart meter an AMI 2.0 meter?

Welcome to the team!

We’re excited to welcome Johan Schalkwyk to Sense! Johan has joined as Strategic Advisor on Artificial Intelligence (AI), where he will help Sense continue to lead on using data and machine learning at the edge of the grid to provide value to consumers and to the grid itself. Prior to joining Sense, Johan spent much of his career at Google where he most recently served as a Google Fellow developing leading-edge AI models.

We are thrilled to have Johan bring his decades of experience from the frontlines of the AI revolution to the essential work of the global energy transition.

An advanced grid requires regulatory innovation

Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Brandon Dyer was recently featured in Utility Dive, where he explored three critical areas that need a fresh regulatory perspective to help achieve the energy transition:

  • Capital cost recovery for software costs
  • Performance-based frameworks focused on specific outcomes
  • Increased incentives for DER penetration

Australia insights

Over the last 18 months, Sense has been working with Australian consumers to adapt our real-time technology for their homes. Through our Melbourne pilot, we have developed a strong understanding of Australian homes and appliances. In a mature market, our detection rate is 95% accurate, explaining over 70% of consumption by appliance. In Australia, we’re rapidly approaching this level of performance as we gather more data and develop market-specific algorithms.

Our Australian families have provided excellent feedback on our technology, of those?who spoke with us, 91% believe Sense gives them a tool to better manage their home energy use. 96% would be more likely to participate in Demand Response, if they were advised precisely what appliances to turn off with a personalized notification via the Sense app. And, 91% would consider switching energy retailers if they offered Sense on a smart meter.

Michael Jary, Sense’s Managing Director for APAC & EMEA, shared these insights during his keynote at Australian Energy Week 2024, highlighting how Sense’s embedded intelligence on smart meters delivers value for retailers, grid operators and consumers across Australia. Additionally, he was interviewed by the conference's editorial team, where he shared further insights ahead of the Future Retail Stream session.
