Bright new light shining on property right

Bright new light shining on property right

I’m even more enthusiastic than usual this week about working in property rights because one of my favourite projects is about to see the light of day. We’ve been working closely with the Thomson Reuters Foundation over the past few months to build up a news portal on property rights. And it’s about to hit screens, phones and desks around the world.

The “Place” portal (for Property, Land, Access, Connections, Empowerment) is being switched on this week and we have very high hopes. The editor, Paola Totaro, and her team around the world have been hard at work looking for stories and understanding the issues.

So far, they have just been sending out teasers on Twitter and Facebook, but already there’s a buzz around the site and the questions it is raising. I can’t wait to see more, and I think this new approach to reporting on property rights is going to help a lot more people to understand why these issues are so important.

From China to Colombia, from remote villages to highly advanced technological centres, property rights are the foundations of economic growth, provide security to families and communities, and allow people to imagine and plan for their futures.

I look forward to learning and writing more about property rights around the world, and I hope you will join us in this effort to underline their importance for people everywhere.

Peter, I am very glad you are making this move. I remember attending a workshop in Geneva with human rights specialists who refused to acknowledge that property rights were actually human rights. They even called me an advocate of neoliberalism for raising the issue.
