A bright idea...

The use of lighting in the sign world can transform a sign from ordinary to extraordinary. It’s a powerful tool that, when used thoughtfully, brings designs to life and ensures they stand out both day and night. Here at Wellcraft MFG, we find ourselves incorporating lighting into around 75% of our projects - and because we're a design based fabrication studio we've developed a good eye for when to use it and what kind to use.

When and Where to Use Lighting

Generally, lighting is essential in high-traffic areas or locations that operate during nighttime hours. Illuminated signs are perfect for storefronts, restaurants, and entertainment venues, drawing in customers and creating a lasting impression. Additionally, wayfinding signs can also benefit greatly from illumination, ensuring readability in low-light conditions.

Why Use Lighting

The primary reason to use lighting in signage is to boost visibility and readability. An illuminated sign attracts attention from a distance, making it easier for customers to locate a business. Beyond functionality, lighting adds depth, dimension, and vibrancy, enhancing the design and helping businesses project a dynamic brand image.

What Kind of Lighting?

Choosing the right type of lighting is crucial for achieving the desired effect and functionality:

Neon Lighting: Neon is perfect for creating a vintage or retro feel. In the past few years we've began incorporating neon into as many designs as we can. Its warm glow and vibrant colors can evoke nostalgia and charm, making it ideal for businesses looking to capture a classic aesthetic. We often make use of neon when signs are for bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues that want to stand out with a unique, timeless look.

LED Lighting: LEDs offer versatility and energy efficiency, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. They can be used for backlighting, edge lighting, and halo effects, providing a modern, sleek appearance. LED signs are durable and cost-effective, making them a popular choice for businesses that want a contemporary look with minimal maintenance.

Uplighting: Uplighting involves placing lights at the base of a sign to shine upwards, highlighting the structure and creating dramatic effects. This technique is great for adding depth and dimension, especially for monument signs and architectural features.

Backlighting: Backlighting, also known as halo lighting, creates a glowing effect around the backs/edges of the sign's letters or logos. This technique enhances visibility and adds a sophisticated, elegant touch. Backlit signs are perfect for high-end businesses looking to project a polished and professional image.

Why Not Use Lighting

However, there are times when lighting may not be necessary or practical. Areas with strict zoning regulations or light pollution concerns may have restrictions. Businesses operating only during daylight hours might not need the added expense of lighting. Additionally, maintenance and energy costs can be a factor; non-illuminated signs can be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

At Wellcraft MFG, we carefully consider when and where to incorporate lighting into our designs. Whether it’s a vibrant neon sign reminiscent of the 1930s or a sleek, modern sign illuminated with LEDs, the right lighting can make all the difference in creating sleek and effective signage. Remember that lighting can significantly impact design. The type of lighting chosen—whether LED, neon, or another—affects the overall look and feel. Neon can evoke a vintage vibe, while LED provides versatility and energy efficiency for modern designs.
