A Bright Future for Newcomers

Why immigrants are set to have a bright future in Canada’s labour market is an interesting article published by Kareem El-Assal analyzing the situation of newcomers in the labour market resulting from impacts of economic factors such as COVID-induced recession.

According to Kareem, even though increased number of applicants are receiving permanent residency during periods of economic downturn, factors such as high rates of retirement in Canada, a more competitive immigration screening process, a shift to selecting more immigrants from within Canada, and increased government investment in helping newcomers will place these skilled newcomers for a bright future in the Canadian economy.

One of the factors highlighted in this article is the deliberate shift in the Canadian immigration screening policy, which has transformed the selection criteria “to account for human capital factors demonstrated by research to result in stronger economic outcomes for immigrants.” For example, applicants that are younger, more educated and fluent in either official languages have a higher chance of getting approved. In addition, Immigration and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is relying on Provinces to select more in-Canada candidates that have existing work experience, education from Canadian institutions and have proven to be already well adjusted in the Canadian workforce.

The article helps you better understand the reason behind increased immigration rates in Canada and factors that will enable newcomers to be successful in the Canadian labour market.
