Brief Relief from the Worry about COVID-19: Major League Baseball Realignment!

Day after day we wake to the COVID-19 news.  Stories about the brave and tireless work of doctors, nurses and first responders.  The enormous suffering of families dealing with the loss of a loved one. Daily questions about the future.  Possible vaccines? Should schools open? Should businesses start back up?

Let’s all take a short break to think about a topic that may bring a smile to our face and hope in our hearts. We don’t diminish the crisis but a brief journey to the national pastime can refresh our souls.

Consider for a brief period the wonderful prospect of the return of Major League Baseball for a shortened season with a new alignment of the divisions.

Philadelphia Phillies baseball is a fundamental tenet of our family and we should look forward of the excitement of realignment. I know that I certainly look forward to such a season.

Phillies-Mets- we know the intensity of the fan rivalry but what will happen when MLB adds Phillies-Yankees? Phillies-Pirates? And yes, Phillies vs. Red Sox!

Baseball, gloriously competitive baseball, with true geographic rivalries! My boyhood friend Dave who moved to the alleged “sports town” of Boston can actively root against the team from his hometown (Shame shame shame on Dave!) while I point out to a college classmate who thinks the world revolves around the Yankees that Bryce Harper is a better ballplayer than David Judge. (Really no doubt about that fact!).

This hasn’t even touched the fact that the “We are Family” Bucs would be in Citizens Bank Park regularly over this too brief season. By the way, so would the minor league Baltimore Orioles- I know, I know they are not minor league but I still haven’t forgiven them for beating our Phillies in 1983 World Series.
