A brief note on Generative AI

Generative AI is the buzz today, with excitement and plenty of content on the topic across social media platforms. The very short duration for the 100M user signups for ChatGPT, reflects the excitement in this new area of AI. This is partly because of the fact that the areas which were generally considered beyond the reach of AI are precisely the ones where Generative AI is making major inroads into. A decade old publication from a research at Oxford in a related area, is an interesting read to understand the change in perspective, and yes, Generative AI can help save you time here with a summarization.

Beyond the buzz, Generative AI has started to find mention in the recent quarterly reports from major businesses, especially the ones leveraging digital technologies. A lot more can be expected in the coming quarters.

Generative AI is widely touted as the next productivity frontier, and early adopters are already experiencing and benchmarking the productivity gains it can bring. PoCs and Pilot Implementations are being used to test the technology in a variety of use cases. Ready-to-use solutions such as GitHub Copilot for Coding, Nvidia Canvas, and Microsoft Designer, among many others, are the most easiest options to experience the capabilities of Generative AI. However, more significant gains are realized when AI models/services are integrated into business processes and enterprise systems.

Generative AI is becoming a key strategic element in defending an enterprise’s competitive advantage.

Being part of the front runners in helping enterprises adopt Generative AI, I have come across many unique use cases and applications. From discussions with business leaders and peers, there are a few trends that can be observed. The following are the top areas being explored

  • Customer Experiences: more engaging, friction less user experiences, chat based interactions in natural language etc.
  • Business Operations: policy and legal documentation summarization, regulatory filings, knowledge capture and employee empowerment etc.
  • Product/Service Design: market research, surveys, social media analytics etc.
  • Developer Productivity: Code completion and snippets generation, test data preparation, unit test creations, test case preparations etc.

Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service has been the leader and go-to platform for most enterprises who are in advanced stages of PoCs and Pilots.

Great POV Kishore. In your conversations, what do you typically see as the blockers? If you’re interested, I just had a fascinating convo with Antony Slumbers about this: https://www.flexos.work/learn/we-need-to-become-exponential-humans-ft-antony-slumbers?utm_campaign=dvli
