A brief history of medicine

A brief history of medicine

When our ancestors used to deal with a bad headache with betel leaves, a hot pepper coffee and sound sleep, we just pop in a pill. Handling health discomforts, medicines and medical practices has really come a long way haven't they?

Curious to know where it all started? Let us quickly and briefly go down the trail of medical evolution.

Primitive man treated illnesses as God’s wrath and treated it with natural elements, mingled with a lot of superstitions and beliefs. There can be no information regarding this that can be verified. These practices happen even today in remote places where education and technology have least or no influence. But we do know from ancient Egyptian times (around 3000 BC) there were healers. Imhotep being the most famous one of all. He produced a written record of almost 200 different medical conditions and their possible remedies.

Hippocrates is considered the father of modern medicine. (460 BC). His major contribution was stating the fact that diseases have natural causes and have nothing to do with the supernatural. He also contributed towards the oath of conduct for physicians which is still used worldwide today. ?

The term “Doctor” arose in the 14th century in Britain. The word doctor is?derived from the Latin verb “docere,” meaning "to teach".

In the 15th century Leonardo da Vinci contributed greatly to our understanding of the human anatomy by studying corpses and making detailed hand drawn sketches of the same.

William Harvey discovered that the heart pumps blood to the body. (17th century).

The 19th century saw the discovery of anesthesia that put an end to almost barbaric practices of operating raw. Also the first woman was awarded a medical degree.

20th century saw the revelation of blood groups and thus made transfusion less dangerous and more effective.

From all these struggles, we have now travelled a very long distance forward and now have the best medical facilities that are improving every second.

The only factor that we now need to balance is time and being knowledgeable about the risks of being careless about our health.

Time - to give health the needed attention and care.

Time - for regular check-ups and solutions.

Time - to reach a medical facility without delay.

Ansfrid celebrates medical evolution and believes in minimizing delays and providing timely care. This is the principle that we work on.?Above all we believe in the humane need of living life without fear, with the freedom to make choices and live with dignity.

“I think the biggest problem with healthcare today is not it’s cost – but for all that money, it’s not an expression of our Humanity.” – Jonathan Bush.?
