After reading a recent article in STAT, I couldn’t help but share some insights. Having transitioned from a board-certified community pediatrician to a certified trauma-informed well-being strategist and coach, I am deeply concerned about the decline in medical students pursuing pediatrics as a specialty. This trend not only threatens our healthcare system but also our future workforce.
From Pediatrics to Trauma-Informed Care
As I transitioned into the role of a trauma-informed well-being strategist and coach, my understanding of the profound long term impact early childhood trauma has on adult health and performance increased. This new focus has highlighted the pivotal role that early interventions play in not only alleviating immediate harm but also in promoting ongoing well-being, resilience and productivity throughout life.
The Ripple Effect of Trauma on Health
The evidence is clear: Trauma, whether it's physical, mental, emotional, sexual, or social, can significantly alter a child's life trajectory. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) negatively impact adult health and lifespan. They increase risks ranging from heart disease to depression to early death. This makes pediatricians’ role in identifying and addressing ACEs crucial, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient society.
Generations Z and Alpha: The Emerging Workforce
Children currently under the care of pediatricians— known as Generation Z and Generation Alpha—are the workforce of tomorrow. The oldest of Generation Alpha are preparing to enter high school, soon to have after-school and summer jobs alongside the youngest of Gen Z, already holding those positions. The oldest Gen Z members began their professional journeys a few years ago. They now work alongside Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. The experiences of these young people, from their unprecedented generational challenges to their emerging roles in society, highlight the urgent need for a trauma-informed approach in all facets of life, including the workplace.
Challenges and Resilience in Modern Childhood
The challenges faced by Generations Z and Alpha not only test their resilience and fortitude but also shape their perspectives. It influences their values, priorities and ultimately the way they will lead and innovate in the future. They've grown up with high risks of school shootings, making active shooter drills as familiar as fire drills. Additionally, a global pandemic disrupted their educational process, further interrupting the sense of security that comes from having a predictable childhood routine. These experiences underscore the importance of integrating trauma-informed strategies with well-being practices, not only for the young people impacted, but also for the older generations who work with them in various capacities. ?
Trauma-Informed Strategies in Action
Though the collective trauma of the younger generations is more apparent, studies have shown that approximately two-thirds of all adults experienced at least one ACE before they reached adulthood.? Many people carry less obvious scars with them daily. It’s important to understand that early life experiences shape not only our personal futures but also our collective societal future.
?As with all generations, the mental, physical, and behavioral health impact on emerging workers can have long lasting affects on productivity, innovation, and healthcare costs. In my current role, I integrate trauma-informed strategies with well-being practices aimed at mitigating these lifelong echoes; echoes that impact our workplaces whether they're recognized or not. From enhancing stress management skills, burnout prevention, and improving morale to improving teamwork and productivity, the potential for positive change is immense.
Investing in the Future: Why Well-Being Work Matters
The work of well-being begins in childhood, but its benefits extend far beyond, influencing innovation, engagement, and overall workplace well-being. It's a testament to the interconnection of our individual and collective health and productivity. The far-reaching benefits highlight why trauma informed well-being work is critical for our society's future.
