Bridging Two Worlds: Coaching and Psychodrama

Bridging Two Worlds: Coaching and Psychodrama

As I'm sure most of you know by now, my purpose in this world?is?to support people in transforming their challenges into growth and success. This is just a snazzy way of saying that I help my clients get better at life challenges so they can lead happier and more productive lives. As an avid learner I am always looking for new and innovative?ways to?best serve my clients. It is with this in mind that I am so proud and excited to announce that I am about to launch my new book:

BRIDGING TWO WORLDS: COACHING AND PSYCHODRAMA

A MANUAL FOR INTEGRATING PSYCHODRAMATICACTION METHODS IN COACHING

I would love to tell you about how this book came to be:

Dublin, Ireland – July 2015: I am attending my fifth International Committee for?Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes (ICASSI)?and participating in a week-long course on psychodrama taught by the amazing Anabella Shaked, an Adlerian Psychopherapist from Israel. After the very first half day of class, I have already decided that I must continue to study psychodrama when I get back to the United States. Never mind that it is a tool usually reserved for psychotherapists, there has got to be something I can learn to use in coaching to benefit my clients!?After all, the two professions share?some important similarities:

  • A strengths-based, positive and optimistic view of the person
  • Belief in the possibility of change throughout the life cycle
  • A perspective that embraces the inherent human creativity that can impel the person to ever higher levels of integration and growth
  • Insistence on calling forth the potentialities and possibilities that each individual can achieve

And here's?the thing: never in my entire career as a coach had I witnessed people having such powerful self-discoveries, breakthroughs and the ability to create immediate powerful changes in such a short time. In a very safe group setting and a playful, theatrical environment, people were profoundly moved, changed, and able to alter the course of their lives for the better.?I knew that if I could learn to master some of these techniques and strategies, I could help my clients experience some of these same results.

In my?quest to figure out how to use psychodrama methods, tools and principles in coaching, I attended?many six-months psychodrama training cohorts, where I had the honor of being taught by Cathy Nugent, founder of?the Laurel Psychodrama Training Institute (LPTI). She was equally as interested in ways that psychodramatic techniques can be used safely and ethically by well-trained and qualified coaches. After many conversations between the two of us, the idea sprouted to “just start” with writing an article on the topic. This quickly grew into something more substantive, and after many months of collaboration between us, we are now so excited as we prepare to launch our book!

In writing this book, our hope was to bridge the two worlds of coaching and psychodrama, giving coaches access to some of the tools psychodrama offers and expanding the therapist’s understanding of the coaching profession.

The?Integrated Coaching Model?uses psychodramatic action methods to expand and deepen the purely verbal method of coaching and this is illustrated further with vignettes featuring a cast of fictional coaching clients. We truly believe this work will break new ground.

The book has been reviewed by a number of prominent coaches and psychodramatists and we are thrilled with initial endorsements:

“Brady and Nugent have created a very useful and powerful guidebook for coaches to incorporate psychodramatic techniques.?Today’s coaching is about body, brain, and being and this manual shows ways to incorporate new methods for enhancing shifts in personal development with groups and individuals as well.”

Dr. Patrick Williams, MCC, Author of Becoming a Professional Life Coach and other books for the coaching professional.

?“This manual is a real contribution to the field of psychodrama – showing that psychodrama is not just for psychotherapy but works beautifully for people seeking change through coaching.”

Karen Carnabucci, LCSW, TEP,?Founder of the Lancaster School of Psychodrama and Experiential Psychotherapies

"'Bridging Two Worlds: Coaching and Psychodrama' is a highly practical and useful manual for coaches looking to expand their practice with new and enlivening techniques, as well as an educational tool for psychodramatists.I highly recommend this manual to coaches and psychodramatists alike!"

Sylvia Israel, LMFT, RDT/BCT, TEP,?Director of Bay Area Moreno Institute, Faculty at California Institute of Integral Studies and Faculty at Kansas State University

The book will be debuted at the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology (NASAP) Conference, May 26, in Arlington, Virginia and available to purchase thereafter. We're pleased to offer the e-book to colleagues and clients at a discounted price.?Please sign up here to receive further information.
