When Cherie and I sat down to brainstorm the Thanksgiving edition of Culinary Complexion, we instantly agreed that cranberries had to take center stage. We both shared stories of our tradition of making homemade cranberry sauce instead of using canned, and I admitted that homemade cranberry sauce is truly my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal.

Cranberry sauce has always been the dish I look forward to most at Thanksgiving. While many people might leave it off their plate, for me, it’s the perfect complement to everything else on the table. Whether it’s turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, or even pumpkin bread, that tart-sweet contrast enhances every bite. To me, no Thanksgiving meal is complete without it.

Growing up, my cousins and sisters thought my obsession with cranberry sauce was excessive. They’d ask why I piled so much onto my plate. But over the years, I’ve slowly converted them into cranberry sauce lovers. Now, they even ask for extra—a testament to how cranberry sauce has become an essential part of our holiday table.

Cranberry sauce not only elevates the meal on Thanksgiving day, but it also plays a starring role in the day-after leftovers sandwich. The Turkey, brie, and crisp apple sandwich wouldn’t be complete without cranberry sauce. Every year, I look forward to that sandwich almost as much as the Thanksgiving meal itself.

I hope my love for cranberry sauce will inspire others to see this dish in a new light, moving beyond the canned version to appreciate just how delicious and essential homemade cranberry sauce truly is.

Homemade Cranberry Chutney

This homemade cranberry chutney recipe brings together the perfect balance of tart cranberries, sweet fruits, and warm spices to elevate any Thanksgiving meal. With a hint of orange zest and a touch of aromatic spices like cloves, ginger, and allspice, this chutney is far from your typical canned cranberry sauce. The combination of fresh cranberries, apples, pears, and raisins creates a rich, flavorful topping that pairs beautifully with everything from turkey to stuffing. It’s a simple yet delicious way to make cranberry sauce the star of your holiday table.


Ingredients:

  • 6 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 apple, chopped
  • 1 pear, chopped
  • Zest of 1 Orange (optional - but my favorite part!)
  • 3 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 3 cups brown sugar
  • ?? cup raisins
  • ??tsp ground cloves
  • ??teaspoon?ground ginger
  • ??teaspoon?ground allspice
  • 2.5 cups of water

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large saucepot.
  2. Bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until cranberries burst and liquid thickens slightly, about 35 minutes.
