As the U.S. Election approaches next week, it's a good time to revisit some principles from my April 22nd article, "Agree to Disagree." Think of this as a timely encore, minus the guitars and loaded with political tension! Living near a swing state, I can confidently say that mentioning the election among a group of 10 locals could easily spark a heated debate. Despite varied opinions on who should be the next President, I truly believe we all share a common desire for a brighter future filled with prosperity, health, happiness, and progress.
?
One fascinating aspect of disagreement is that we often have shared goals when we step back a little. As I highlighted in April, aligning on the underlying objectives of the people involved can help dismantle disagreements and pave the way for mutual progress. Given the current political climate, where two candidates with starkly different ideologies are vying for the presidency, it's crucial to remember that we can maintain our communities and neighborly bonds without tearing each other apart. Disagreement can coexist with decency and respect.

Here are a few reminders to keep in mind as we approach this critical week:
?
Support the democratic process: The ability to disagree and cast different votes is a fundamental freedom we cherish in the United States. We must embrace this aspect of democracy.

Understand Individual Stories: Everyone has a unique story and background, often unknown to those around them. Taking the time to learn about what has shaped someone's opinions before jumping to conclusions can really help humanize their ideas and opinions when we disagree. While perspectives can and should evolve, understanding the why behind someone's beliefs is crucial.
?
Embrace Learning: Not every disagreement will end in consensus, and that's perfectly fine and sometimes, persistent attempts to reach an agreement are futile. Embracing disagreement as an opportunity to rethink our own beliefs and learn something new is where growth occurs, even if agreement doesn’t.
?
As we conclude the 2024 Presidential Election season, the coming months promise to be interesting. Despite our differences, we have the chance to grow closer, not further apart. I remain hopeful for our future and grateful to live in a country where we can openly express our disagreements.

Let's cherish the democratic process, respect each other's backgrounds, and know when to agree to disagree. Together, we can build a better future.
Het kan en moet anders. Zeker nu! Het is een uitdagende tijd!! Snel, inclusief en integraal denken, troubleshooten, creatief oplossen, out of the box denken, netwerken en experimenteren past bij me.
