This is equally true for corporate offices of franchise brands, where understanding these core principles at a high level can make a significant difference in strategic decision-making and overall business health.

Throughout my 40+ years of experience, I have observed that many individuals who fail in the franchise or restaurant business often lack an understanding of these best business practices. Many have little to no general business experience before embarking on their entrepreneurial journey, whether as franchisees, or as independent business or restaurant owners. This lack of preparation can lead to costly mistakes and ultimately, business failure.
There are various ways to educate oneself on general business skills. Enrolling in business courses, whether online or in-person, can provide a comprehensive understanding of essential business principles. Reading business books and industry publications can offer valuable insights and keep one updated on the latest trends and best practices. Networking with other business owners and industry professionals can provide practical advice and mentorship. Attending workshops, seminars, and conferences can also enhance one’s knowledge and skills, offering opportunities to learn from experts and peers. Online resources, such as webinars, podcasts, and blogs, can be convenient ways to gain knowledge and stay informed. Practical experience, such as working in different roles within a business or volunteering for business-related projects, can also be invaluable in building a solid foundation in general business skills.
Regardless of the business venture and specific industry, the importance of understanding and applying general business disciplines cannot be overstated. By prioritizing education and continuous improvement in these areas, business and restaurant owners and their managers can significantly increase their chances of success and sustainability.
