Bridging the Goal Gap: Conquering the Mountain Together – lessons from Oprah Winfrey and JK Rowling

Hi everyone!

Welcome to our third edition of ‘Finding My Way’, the bi-weekly newsletter from Jade Compass Coaching!

Have you ever set a personal goal, brimming with excitement and ready to take on the world, only to find yourself stalled a few weeks (or days!) later? It's a common story. Reaching our goals can feel like climbing a mountain – exhilarating at first, but the path can be long, winding, and sometimes downright discouraging. Here's the thing: that initial spark can fade quickly when faced with the reality of the climb. Life gets busy, daily tasks pile up, and distractions abound. This is where the goal gap emerges – the space between where we are and where we want to be. This vast and intimidating gap can lead to a number of roadblocks that threaten to derail our entire journey:

  • Losing Focus: Daily tasks and distractions can easily pull us away from our goals. That initial spark of motivation can fade quickly if we don't actively tend to it.
  • Feeling Overwhelmed: A giant, looming goal can feel paralyzing. Where do you even begin? How do you navigate such a complex undertaking?
  • Self-Doubt: That nagging voice whispering "you can't do this" can be surprisingly loud. It can chip away at our confidence and make us question our ability to succeed.
  • Lack of Support: Sometimes, going it alone just feels...well, lonely. It's hard to stay motivated without someone cheering you on, celebrating your wins, and holding you accountable during setbacks.

These roadblocks are real, and they can be tough to overcome. But here's the good news: our brains, while wired for survival more than growth, are also incredibly adaptable. We can outsmart these roadblocks and bridge the goal gap with some key strategies:

  • Chunk It Down: Break your big goal into smaller, achievable steps. This makes the process feel less intimidating and overwhelming. Imagine a giant rock wall – it's much easier to scale when you have handholds and footholds, right? Smaller, achievable steps act as those handholds and footholds, allowing you to make steady progress towards your summit.
  • Plan and Schedule: Treat your goal like an important appointment. Block out time in your calendar for focused work on your goal. This helps to ensure that your goal doesn't get lost in the shuffle of daily life.
  • Find Your Why: Remind yourself WHY this goal matters to you. A clear purpose fuels motivation and keeps you going when things get tough. What will achieving this goal allow you to do or experience? Tap into that deeper purpose to reignite your passion and commitment.
  • Build Your Support System: Tell your friends and family! Find a mentor or coach who can offer guidance and encouragement. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people who believe in you and your goals. A strong support system can be the difference between giving up and reaching the summit.

Even the most successful people face the goal gap. Take Oprah Winfrey, for example. Fired from her first television job due to being "unfit for TV," she could have easily let discouragement win. However, she used this setback as fuel, focusing on honing her skills and eventually landing a bigger and better opportunity in Baltimore. From there, her career skyrocketed, proving that setbacks are part of the journey and significant goals can be achieved with perseverance and the right support system.

J.K. Rowling's journey with Harry Potter is another inspiring example. Facing numerous rejections from publishers, she could have given up on her dream. However, she believed in her story and kept refining it. Eventually, a small publisher took a chance, and the rest, as they say, is history. Rowling's story highlights the importance of "chunking down" a goal (getting published) and the power of persistence in the face of setbacks.

These are just two examples, but there are countless others who have overcome significant challenges to achieve their dreams. The key takeaway is that the goal gap is a normal part of the journey. By understanding the roadblocks and implementing strategies to overcome them, you too can bridge the gap and achieve your dreams.
