Bridging Generations: Young Trainers, Veteran Learners
Training programmes often bring together a diverse group of participants, including seasoned veterans. When young trainers are tasked with leading sessions for experienced participants, they can encounter unique challenges.?
Here are some ways that can help them effectively navigate the challenges that may arise.
Gain multiple perspectives on the topic before starting a training session
It can simply be put as — don’t just read one book and then start training. Research various arguments related to the topic and concepts you want to present.?
When you are aware of different arguments, you can anticipate any negative feedback or disagreements about what you’re presenting. So, make sure to prepare accordingly to handle these opposing views. Don’t get caught off guard.
Etiquette > Logic
Logical thinking might lead us to believe that students should respect their teachers. It might suggest that young people are more exposed to the latest knowledge. Logic may support the idea that knowledge is more important than the person delivering it.

However, our values emphasize that the young must respect the elderly. No matter who we are or how skilled we may be, we are obligated to respect those who are older.
To avoid the risk of being perceived as "trying to show off" to more seasoned participants, it’s better to remain humble. There’s nothing to lose by prioritising proper etiquette in interactions during training sessions.
Adhering to a Philosophy Consistently
When training on soft skills topics, the lack of experience can be compensated by adhering to a specific philosophy related to the topic.
For example, in the context of customer service, the philosophy might be "the customer is always right, as long as they are in the right shop." This philosophy sets a limit on the idea that the customer is always right and allows for a "right of refusal" in situations beyond control.
Consistently apply the philosophy in all situations. This will help gather various stories, examples, and case studies that can be used to strengthen the delivery of the philosophy on the topic during training sessions.
While young trainers may face challenges when working with veteran participants, these obstacles can be effectively managed. By embracing these approaches, young trainers can create a dynamic and productive training experience that benefits all participants.
