Bridging the gap

Bridging the gap

Preventing homelessness is one of the most powerful ways we can strengthen and uplift our community, and it starts with keeping families safe in their homes. At United Way, we see firsthand the difference early intervention can make. Take the story of a Thorold mother, who after years of hard work, lost her job due to an unexpected downsizing. In just six weeks, she was behind on rent and at risk of losing her home—the place where her son felt secure, close to his school and friends.

“I have always worked hard to provide for my family. Money was tight but I made it work, we were happy and most importantly safe. When the company I worked for downsized unexpectedly, I was without work for just six weeks. That was enough to push me too far behind to keep up with rent, bills and everything else that comes with motherhood.

"Your kindness and generosity prevented my family from becoming homeless. Thank you so much."

I was terrified of losing our housing. There was no way I could find another safe place for my son and I that was affordable near the school and friends he loves so much. With assistance from a United Way program, I was able to bridge the gap, catch up on missed payments to get back on my feet and keep our housing. I am so grateful for this, for my son, and for myself. Your kindness and generosity prevented my family from becoming homeless. Thank you so much.” - Thorold residents

With support from a United Way program, she was able to catch up on payments and keep her home, ensuring stability for her family.

This is why our work matters. By supporting United Way, you’re not just providing financial assistance; you’re helping prevent the devastating spiral of homelessness and giving families a chance to rebuild.
