Bridging the gap: strengthening policy for equid welfare in India

Creating a world where working animals have a life worth living.
Hello, I’m Priya Pandey from Brooke India. I am a member of the team working on Brooke’s new #DisasterRiskManagement Global #ResearchProgramme.
Before, during, and after a disaster the role of horses, donkeys and mules extends beyond merely transporting goods; they are also vital in assisting with the evacuation of vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, children, and women unable to access vehicles. Their ability to navigate difficult landscapes ensures that those most at risk are not left behind during evacuation operations.
Despite the significant role of equids, disasters such as floods often lead to tragic outcomes for these animals as well. In the face of calamity, many owners are forced to abandon their equids, fleeing rising waters or critical situations without the resources to care for them. This abandonment results in malnutrition, injuries, and consequential suffering for the animals left behind.

In India, several effective policies are in place regarding animal welfare and disaster response. Nevertheless, the crux of the issue lies in community awareness. Many community members remain uninformed about these policies or the resources available for equids during disasters, including shelters for animals. The gap between policy formulation and implementation reflects the need for a well-informed populace that understands their rights and available support during challenging times.
Brooke India (BI) plays a crucial role in bridging this gap. They are actively working to build awareness in communities regarding disaster policies and the resources provided by the government for the welfare of equines during emergencies. Through educational initiatives, resources, and outreach programs, BI aims to empower community members with the knowledge required to take action and safeguard their animals. By promoting understanding regarding shelters, feeding programs, and medical assistance during disasters, BI hopes to mitigate the adverse effects on equids and enhance the overall disaster resilience of communities.
Our research aims to understand the issues facing working equids and their owners during all stages of disaster risk management.
