Bridging The Gap – Standing Out From The Crowd At Automotive Events

Living so close to the race track at Donnington as a child in the mid-1980s I could always hear the racing from the back garden. So my brother and I begged the parents to take us to find out what it was all about. We visited in the days when noise wasn’t limited and you could pretty much wander around anywhere…. Well, that is when Gemma the petrolhead was born… and also slightly burnt by the experience.
Ah, the memories... Wandering around the pits and watching the cars come in and out of the garages was such a thrill seeing the teams frantically rush around to modify and change parts was so interesting and the speed achieved in doing so. Being able to walk over the once-infamous Dunlop Bridge (such a clever bit of marketing) was all new for me.?
All was going swimmingly on attending my first event. Until… My brother being the true caring sibling he is, took his chance to tell me to touch a tyre on a car that had just come off the track (whilst my parent's gaze was elsewhere) ouch!!
That did not deter me! Nor did it my brother when we attended the Motorshow at the NEC in the late ’80s (he wasn’t even at the age to drive but…) he got on a stand and proceeded to be sold a top-of-the-range sportscar – we had to drag him away and apologise.
It’s not just the one type of motorsport that I am interested in… here is a potted history of some of the automotive events that I have attended.
Moto GP – Donington Park 2000
FIA Summer Finals – Drag Racing – Santa Pod 2012
Plum Pudding Races Mallory Park 2012
Race Retro – Stoneleigh Abbey 2012
Superstars World Cup and Auto GP – Donington Park 2013
BTCC Donington Park 2014
Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb 2014
F1 in Singapore – 2016

Classic Motorsport Event Organiser at Lombard Rally Bath/Lombard Rally Festivals
1 年I would appreciate some thoughts, please. Brought up since, literally, a toddler, in motorsport, I have been running a series of Historic Rally Car Demonstration events around the UK since 2018. The first one was supposed to be a small one-off event, but they have grown since. We have had no sponsorship, the use of the Lombard name is that only, for historical context, the events have to generate income to pay for themselves. Two questions 1. As I would like to make the events more sustainable, so what could we offer to attract support/sponsorship? 2. At one event after COVID lockdown, we organised a drive-in to the event, followed by a scenic tour with stops at stately homes, for a prestige dealership - would that be something that we should promote?
