Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Problem-Solving Skills in Computer Science Education

One of the most pressing challenges facing both students and educators in Computer Science is fostering the ability to effectively apply data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving skills to real-world scenarios, particularly during formative and summative assessments.

While classroom teaching and in-lesson examples often appear clear and comprehensible, a significant gap emerges when learners are tasked with independently solving problems. Identifying the correct concepts, selecting appropriate constructs, and building solutions from scratch become formidable hurdles. This challenge is especially evident in the IGCSE and A-Level Computer Science examinations, where students must demonstrate not only theoretical knowledge but also practical problem-solving skills to tackle complex, unseen questions.

This raises a critical question for us as Computer Science educators: What are we missing in our teaching approaches, and how can we better support our learners to develop the problem-solving skills needed to excel in these examinations?
