Bridging the Gap: A Blueprint For Leading Positive Impact

Bridging the Gap: A Blueprint For Leading Positive Impact

As a 5-year-old girl growing up in former Yugoslavia, I was captivated by long movies about Mahatma Gandhi and his people. I was fascinated by their culture, traditions and more than anything, by Gandhi himself.

That fascination and his teachings stayed with me, guiding my life journey through the bloodshed during the collapse of former Yugoslavia to become a speaker, pacifist, advocate, and expert in humanitarian efforts, refugee resettlement, and crisis intervention.

Gandhi's teachings have guided me on this path of compassion and peace.

His teachings are relevant globally today, promoting nonviolence, justice and social change principles.

Here are the essential teachings or principles of Gandhi that have enduring global importance and are relevant more than ever as follows:

Nonviolence - Commitment to nonviolence to achieve social and political change remains a cornerstone of his teachings, encouraging us to resolve conflicts peacefully and reject violence as a solution.

Civil Disobedience - Advocy for peaceful civil disobedience as a powerful tool for resisting oppression and injustice through nonviolent protest and non-cooperation with unjust laws or authorities.

Truth Force or Soul Force - A concept that individuals can resist oppression and injustice through nonviolent resistance rooted in truth and moral courage by emphasizing the power of honesty, integrity and nonviolent action.

Well-being for All - A welfare of all, not just a select few by envisioning a society where the well-being of the poorest and most marginalized was prioritized, underscoring the importance of social and economic justice.

Self-Reliance - Encouraged self-reliance and using local resources to reduce dependence on foreign goods. This idea has relevance in today's world, where sustainable and self-sufficient practices are essential for environmental and economic sustainability.

Interfaith Harmony - By promoting religious tolerance and unity among different faiths in a world of religious diversity and conflicts, his teachings on interfaith harmony are crucial for fostering peace and understanding.

Simplicity and Minimalism - Simple and minimalistic lifestyle emphasizes the importance of reducing materialism and consumerism, an idea that aligns with modern concerns about sustainability and environmental conservation.

Equality and Social Justice - As a strong advocate for equality among all people, regardless of their caste, gender, or economic status, the fight against discrimination and inequality inspires global social justice movements.

Environmental Stewardship - Teachings on environmental conservation emphasize simple living and respect for nature, aligning with contemporary efforts to address ecological challenges we are experiancing today.

Global Solidarity - Gandhi's message transcended borders and emphasized the interconnectedness of humanity. In an increasingly globalized world, his teachings encourage a sense of global solidarity and cooperation more than ever.

You must be the change you want to see in the world. ~ Mahatma Gandhi

These teachings are particularly relevant in addressing social inequality, racial injustice, environmental degradation and conflicts that persist worldwide.

They provide a moral and philosophical framework for individuals and societies seeking to create positive change through peaceful and ethical means.

By bringing the gap in today's modern leadership with Gandhi's principles we have a tremendous opportunity to lead better and positively impact the world.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Today we see evidence of many threads of change that echo through time, especially through artistic curations in the spirit of Gandhi that so many of us keep close to our hearts regardless of our culture or upbringing.

One of the great opportunities came through?Shelly Jyoti, a Delhi-based artist and curator subject matter expert in visual arts, textiles, fashion and poetry on this topic on Legacy Leaders Show!

Her current solo show can be seen at South Asian Insitute in Chicago, IL, as a 2023 Indigo: The Blue Gold, which I had an opportunity to experience firsthand in addition to hearing these powerful words of encouragement:

You're shedding light on a critically important question, Izabela: what does the leadership of our future look like? As business and social responsibility become increasingly intertwined, leadership needs are changing. The demographic make-up of the global talent pool and consumer base has already changed, despite the fact that Gen Z is going to overtake the Boomers as the largest generation in history. More than ever, qualities like empathy and open-mindedness are critical to effective leadership.

I love the Ghandi quote you use... "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind!" Instead of focusing on personal justice, our world needs leaders who unabashedly model compassion and peace.

Great article that we should all reflect on. Thinking today of how much we have fought for a better world - of greater well-being and greater justice - can make us understand how in many countries greater collective well-being has been achieved, but certainly also that the human being and his society do not it has improved on many more basic areas such as those of class disparities, differences of race and sex, and religious faith. And also understand why what divides us prevails rather than what unites us. How come numerous distinctions, schisms and fractures always arise in every party, religion or collective action. I believe that each of us has built (voluntarily or unconsciously, out of naivety, ignorance or out of selfishness, personal interest) a vision of reality that is somehow simpler than the actual complexity around us. The first step to overcome this desire not to see the problems and put your head in the sand is to accept the problem and look for solutions. We should each of us try, as best we can, to manage the complexity of reality in all its innumerable facets: Do what you must, do what you can!!

Thank you so much Izabela for featuring me the cover of your magazine in the insightful article on creating a blue print for positive and alternative world. A great initiative ! Gandhi Ji's philosophies hold universal value for humanity and the world. All his ideas encourage individuals to take action in line with their duties towards the community, country, and themselves. When individuals with similar mindsets come together, they have the potential to drive social change. Through my art, poetry and installtions, I explore Gandhis thought leadership in relevance to the 21st Century.
