Bridging the gap between Physical & Digital - Remote Collaboration

Bridging the gap between Physical & Digital - Remote Collaboration

Over 2 years ago now, [early 2019/end 2018] before COVID and remote working was "trendy", with my team we created a remote working solution in a virtual environment for a client.

A virtual collaborative XR solution on a construction site for an Australian leader in the Transportation industry

Team collaboration enhance efficiency in projects. It saves time, money while lowering risks! One stone, 3 birds! This major infrastructure project in Australia decided to focus on collaboration.

A simple concept leading to many difficulties!

How can this client get various teams work collaboratively for complex large problems involving multi-functional teams, especially when these teams are distributed in several locations?

How can they report more efficiency and clearly to management, was a nice to have.

Main problem

We re-used a virtual office environment with a lounge entrance, a kitchen, an open space with desks and a few rooms as an entry point to gather every worker on virtual site, in this environment accessible 24/7.

We also created 3 extra rooms to gather “trainees” in the virtual space to be used for training, or just for any clients – as we used that space to demo our previous XR projects either as PPT, pictures or as integrated 3D models to entire BIM model inside the virtual space.

When everyone was comfortable, we would all teleport through to the client’s project for team work.

Functionalities to add value: iterate, iterate and iterate!

What does the client value? Ensure the solution add value for them!

Our client virtual space was a construction site (currently being built). Any workers from the projects could join and virtually visualize what their team and other teams plan to build. A point and speak in a physical non-existing space!

Start: From the ability to solve the 3 questions most commonly asked in a construction site*, the project quickly evolved into the creation of a Design review tool.

A virtual clash detection solution : to identify and flag clashes between multi-functional teams! - with a ever growing list of functionalities:

To export the clashes in a workable format, from MEP to each trade FIR, ELE.., and any functionalities to obtain an easier working environment for remote workers.

Layers, task assignation, mark-ups functions, measuring tool until we realised the need for even more information, actually for any types of metadata in that environment.

To be continued.. (1/3)

Priscilla Koukoui has created and led teams to deliver over 20 value-based and design-led tailor-made XR solutions for business.

From virtual visualisation environments (with a twist!), reality modelling, 3D audit tool to blending machine learning in a 3D environment to adapt to trainees in the virtual training age, mainly for the AEC industry.

She blends design thinking to design the right think, then deliver the XR/innovative thing right with a lean mindset.

Outside of business hours, she re-use similar cutting-edge technologies and innovative agile mindset to deliver HumanITY focus messages by crafting modern multi-sensory immersive stories.

This is a long sentence, you can start reading it again :)
