Bridging the Gap Between Dev & Ops

Bridging the Gap Between Dev & Ops

Software runs the critical infrastructure of nearly every modern business. For the best companies, these are custom applications that can be a key competitive differentiator. However, the traditional separation between IT operations and development teams can lead to inefficiencies when improvements are applied to only one part of the value chain.

Software Development and Operations are all too often pitted against each other by inconsistent leadership direction.

For example, the software development best practices today require a development team to deliver new releases of their application every two weeks as compared with once every quarter. The operations team may struggle to keep up that pace, thus running the risk that not all releasable features will be able to make it into production.

Operations – Reduce Costs, Increase Security! Development – Deliver More, Deliver Faster, Higher Quality.

This is why we must begin thinking of IT as encompassing both sides of the effort. Development and Operations alignment is critically important to successfully utilizing technology as a competitive advantage. Microsoft’s agility and DevOps is all about getting software features from development into production. This is done with a focus on the flow of business value across both of the Development and Operations teams. Microsoft and Azure offer a comprehensive solution supporting strong agility and modern DevOps practices, on premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid environments.

What does this mean for customers? It means they can use any combination of Azure, Visual Studio and Visual Studio online, Windows Hypervisor, System Center and Application Insights. Plus, this is not an all or nothing proposition. Customers can adopt whatever tools they need over time allowing them to evolve their custom solutions organically. Azure enables compute resources to be provisioned and decommissioned on demand quickly and in a cost-efficient way. This is all done with the highest levels of security, dispelling many common customer concerns about the public cloud.
