Bridging the Divide: Redefining Gender Equality for Safer and Inclusive Spaces

The safety and freedom of girls and women are paramount, not just for a fair and just society but for a thriving, inclusive world. It’s time to shift the narrative about the girl child, ensuring that she is empowered not only by the opportunities around her but by the policies and law enforcement that protect her—both in physical spaces and online.

One powerful message that continues to echo within me is the importance of addressing not just the enactment but the implementation of policies and laws that ensure the safety of girls in public spaces. Whether it’s physical spaces or the digital realm, girls must feel free to walk, speak, and express themselves without the looming threat of harassment or violence. This involves a deep commitment to both strong policy frameworks and their rigorous enforcement, ensuring that those who commit violence face accountability.

JSI launch

We are at a pivotal moment in the fight for gender equality, where the girl child must not just be seen as a victim of circumstances but as a powerful force in shaping a safe and inclusive world. I am inspired by the Jamii Salama Initiative (#JSI), launched in partnership with organizations like Serengeti Bytes , LP Digital , Our Voices Against Harassment , Tai Impact , C-Sema WiLDAF Tanzania Fasat Org Amani initiatives . This initiative is a bold step toward creating sexual harassment-free public spaces in Tanzania. Through collective action and collaboration, JSI amplifies a shared vision of safer, more inclusive spaces for girls to thrive.

At the heart of the JSI launch was my beautiful and bold friend Ms. Modesta Joseph , founder and CEO of Our Voices Against Harassment , whose leadership has been transformative. Her team’s dedication to combating gender-based violence and providing resources to empower girls in Tanzania is truly commendable. Together, with their partners, they are creating awareness and taking actionable steps to change how society views and protects the girl child. Their vision aligns perfectly with the movement for safer cities and spaces for women and girls. Modesta’s unwavering commitment continues to inspire me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to witness the power of her work firsthand.

WYDE by Imara leadership Initiative

In my recent participation at the Women and Youth in Democracy Civic (WYDE) Engagement Workshop, I was reminded of how much work is yet to be done when I met the amazing Dr. Naike Moshi whose inspiring words and shared poem have stayed with me. Dr. Naike's reflections underscored the transformative power of creating environments where the girl child not only survives but thrives—where she can take up space without fear. Her call for action was clear: the status quo must change, and it is on us to demand a world that truly values the safety of every girl.

Equally inspiring was Dorice John Mgetta , whose personal journey and transformative story in the political space moved everyone in the room. Her reflections on overcoming gender-based barriers in politics and leadership resonate with me and are a powerful call for action to all of us to make space for more women in governance.

The WYDE workshop is a testament of the incredible work of Petrider Paul and the whole organizing team Imara Leadership Initiative for pulling together such an gem-packed event. It’s rare to see such thought leadership and a strong commitment to fostering real change.

Furthermore, I’d like to commend Ms.Sylvia Mkomwa and Mr. Kennedy Mmari CEO of Serengeti Bytes, for their segment and contrinution on the HeForShe initiative. They provided important insights into how both men and women must join hands in creating an equal and safe space for all, emphasizing the power of collaboration in driving gender equality.

As we advance this conversation, let us draw strength and inspiration from the incredible women leading the way and let their stories fuel our passion for a safer, more inclusive future.
