Bridging the Alignment Gap: A Fresh Look at Veterinary Care

Bridging the Alignment Gap: A Fresh Look at Veterinary Care

I've been reading a lot about alignment of incentives recently from Bill Ackman to Elon Musk and it leads to a profound question: are veterinarians truly aligned with their patients? At first glance, the answer seems obvious – of course, they are! Veterinarians dedicate their lives to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our beloved pets. However, upon closer examination, we find a misalignment deeply rooted in the economic structure of most veterinary practices.

The heart of this misalignment lies in the approach towards preventative care, which encompasses routine health checks, vaccinations, and wellness visits. Traditionally, vet clinics have viewed these services as loss leaders. In other words, these are services provided at a loss or marginal profit, with the hopes that they will lead to more lucrative procedures, such as surgeries or chronic disease management.

This approach creates a conflict of interest – while veterinarians genuinely care for the wellbeing of pets, the economic model rewards clinics when pets fall sick or require extensive treatments. Essentially, the current structure of veterinary care inadvertently incentivizes illness over health.

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Shouldn't we prioritize keeping our pets healthy over treating them when they're sick?

To truly align veterinary services with the needs of pets and their owners, we need to reimagine the economic model. We must shift away from viewing preventative care as a loss leader and instead, see it as the foundation of a sustainable veterinary practice.

Imagine a system where routine check-ups, vaccinations, and wellness visits are the primary revenue source. This would place the focus on keeping pets healthy, preventing diseases, and catching potential health issues early on when they're most treatable. Such a model would align the financial success of vet clinics with the health and longevity of pets, leading to a win-win scenario for all.

Moreover, with the advancements in digital technology, we now have more opportunities to make preventative care more accessible and efficient. Telemedicine and digital consultations can complement physical visits, providing pet owners with around-the-clock access to veterinary advice and care.

In this new era of veterinary medicine, the most successful practices will be those that realign their services with the needs of pets and their owners. Let's move away from a system that profits from sickness and towards one that rewards health. Let's bridge the alignment gap for a healthier future for our pets.

More to come from Snoots.
