Bridge of the Tangenziale di Napoli: Innovative Seismic Retrofitting and Construction Solutions

The Tangenziale di Napoli, a 20.2 km long strategic highway infrastructure with 14 junctions, serves the cities of Naples and Pozzuoli, boasting an impressive daily traffic of nearly 240,000 vehicles (equivalent to around 87 million crossings annually). For over five decades, it has been instrumental in connecting communities and facilitating seamless transportation. Nonetheless, the growing need to bolster its seismic resilience has become increasingly apparent.

Types of reinforcement applied

To address this critical issue, a comprehensive seismic retrofitting project has been implemented, incorporating cutting-edge techniques such as superstructure isolation and pier reinforcement. This includes the use of cast in-situ concrete monolithic joints. These measures not only enhance the highway's ability to withstand seismic events but also ensure the safety and efficiency of bridge construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation tasks.

A game-changing solution in the bridge construction and rehabilitation landscape is the Platform System. This modular platform structure is designed to deliver a secure and efficient working environment for bridge projects. Its flexibility and adaptability allow it to accommodate various bridge types, including straight, curved, inclined, and multi-level bridges. The Platform System provides a robust and stable foundation for workers to perform their tasks with optimal safety and efficiency.

Platform system

By integrating the Tangenziale di Napoli's seismic retrofitting advancements with the Platform System, it is revolutionizing the way bridges are built and rehabilitated. This holistic approach not only ensures the longevity and reliability of our infrastructure but also enhances the safety and well-being of the workers involved.

As a member of the Istituto per le Tecnologie della Costruzione (ITC) and the research group led by Professor Nicola Caterino, I was privileged to participate in a technical visit to this project. During the visit, I was able to identify some current construction methodologies and share the latest research on bridge risk mitigation. It was an enriching and rewarding experience to witness first-hand the progress and challenges of this project. My participation will contribute to the advancement of future research on seismic risk mitigation in infrastructure.
