Bridge Design 2020

MSc2 elective course for Architecture & Civil Engineering students

Bridge Design 2020 turned out to be a course not any of us is likely to forget. We started out in good spirits on a very windy bike trip along the Rotte, were we didn’t face any hardships that a flat tire repair kit and some encouraging words couldn’t fix. We got to know each other a bit and kept each other out of the wind. The first masterclass was in the very capable hands of Martin Knight. Meanwhile, the implications of the nasty virus that was out there soon made themselves know. We saw each other live for what turned out to be the last time on Wednesday 11th, the day before society went into a lock-down. I now feel safe to admit that I did panic for a moment, not knowing how I would ever get all of you through my course. However, online tutoring was up in no time and we managed just fine. With the help of Stijn Joosten from Arup, the second masterclass was an efficient exercise in Zoom that worked much better than I ever would have thought had someone asked me a month ago. We kept seeing each other online on a regular basis and kept in touch in the WhatsApp group and via mails. The final presentations were again performed in Zoom. I can’t tell you how pleased I am, not only with the results, but also with the fact that you all persevered and finished the course successfully from within the walls of your own personal confinements. I am proud of you all! Take care of yourself and of each other and see you all soon in BK-City.
