I just wrapped up a fantastic workshop with a group of engaged leaders – business heads, decision-makers, and marketing experts. We focused on the power of communication, and it became clear that unlearning and relearning key practices is something we all need to do.

Here’s the thing: clear communication isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s essential for leaders. It's the bridge between confusion and clarity, the key to a high-performing team, and ultimately, your success.

But with packed schedules and competing priorities, how can you ensure your message lands every time?

In this article, I'm sharing some actionable communication strategies to help you lead with confidence and build strong relationships with your team.

The Communication Gap: A Frustrating Reality

Ever felt like your words are getting lost in translation? You give clear instructions, but tasks are done incorrectly. You set expectations, but deadlines are missed. This frustrating communication gap is a common struggle for leaders and can significantly impact team morale and productivity.

According to Pumble, a whopping 69% of employees believe ineffective communication is a major workplace problem. That's almost 7 out of 10 people! This means your words have a powerful impact, and mastering communication can be a game-changer.

Words that Build, Not Burn

Imagine having a tough conversation with a team member. Instead of saying, "You missed the deadline again!" (a classic "you" statement), try an "I" statement: "I'm concerned about the missed deadline. Is there anything I can do to help you meet future deadlines?" See the difference? "I" statements focus on your feelings and encourage a solution-oriented discussion. They open the door for collaboration and foster a more positive and productive environment.

Active Listening: The Art of Truly Hearing

Communication isn’t a one-way street. It’s about truly listening. Actively listen by giving your full attention, making eye contact, and asking clarifying questions. Imagine an employee comes to you frustrated. By actively listening with empathy (putting yourself in their shoes), you can understand their perspective and find a solution that works for everyone. Maybe they have a personal issue impacting their work, or perhaps the project needs a revised timeline. Active listening allows you to uncover the root cause and work together towards a resolution.

Assertiveness: The Golden Triangle

Think of communication styles as a triangle. On one point is the passive leader, who avoids conflict and lets others walk all over them. Their unclear instructions leave their team feeling lost and frustrated. On the other point is the aggressive leader, who bulldozes through conversations, dominates discussions, and creates a tense environment. But the sweet spot lies in assertiveness!

An assertive leader clearly communicates their needs and respects the needs of others. They use "I" statements, practice active listening, and find win-win solutions. They confidently express their ideas, but they’re also open to feedback and willing to adapt when necessary. This builds trust and fosters strong working relationships where team members feel valued and heard.

Passive Approach: You avoid mentioning it, hoping they'll "figure it out" next time. (This leads to confusion and a potential repeat of the issue.)

Aggressive Approach: You call them out publicly, criticizing their work and making them feel defensive. (This damages morale and discourages future collaboration.)

Assertive Approach: You schedule a private meeting to discuss the work. "I noticed the approach taken on X project differed from our initial discussion. Can we walk through it together and see how we can achieve the desired outcome?" (This fosters open communication and a chance to learn from the experience.)
