Bricka Iphanta - Soldier On A Mission 2.0

“YES, I AM A SOLDIER UNDER THE SOUTH AFRICAN MILITARY AIR FORCE. ‘SOLDIER ON A MISSION 2.0’. MY LATEST ALBUM WAS RELEASED WHILST IN MOZAMBIQUE ON A MILITARY MISSION.”

Khumbulani Khoza, (36) better known by his stage name 'Bricka Iphanta', is a songwriter, vernacular rapper, and a South African Defense Force Member (Air Force Military). He grew up in Tongaat and later moved to Stanger, KwaZulu Natal. Bricka Iphanta started releasing music in 2012 and has released 5 musical projects so far. His musical philosophy centers on discipline, maintaining an image of a soldier with a mission and using his music to impact society positively. His message to his fans is one of learning from past mistakes, finding one's purpose, and continuously striving for self-improvement.

“Music is a powerful tool to unite people, send a message and campaign towards something. It is art, meaning you can also express your emotions & ideas through a rhythm. Music is global irrespective of the language used on the lyrics. The sound always stands out…”

What is your favorite part about being a rapper/musician in Durban?

“Durban is steeped in history, has a gorgeous coastline, and an incredible enthusiasm for entertainment. Residents of Durban truly appreciate being entertained. I feel proud to be a defender and entertainer for them. A few Hip Hop artists have achieved mainstream success. I'm confident that Durban will accept me if I have the right team assisting me…”

What’s that one thing you wish you would have known before you began your career as a rapper/musician?

“Acknowledging the theoretical and commercial aspects of music, and familiarizing myself with the industry, was necessary to escape ignorance. My mistakes were results of my unawareness, yet Soldier On a Mission 2.0 made me cognizant, provided me with knowledge, and allowed me to avoid repeating those errors and do better than I did last time…”

His sound is a fusion of hip-hop, Kwaito, and military-inspired elements, creating a unique blend that resonates with a diverse audience. Throughout his musical journey, Bricka Iphanta has shared stages with renowned artists like Pro Kid, T-Bo Touch, Busi, Beast, Duncan, Zakwe, and Siya Shezi. His music has also received airplay on prominent radio stations, including Metro FM, Yfm, Ukhozi FM, and Gagasi FM. Additionally, his music videos have aired on Channel O and MTV Base.

“My late mother is number one on the list of people who have been most influential to me because she brought me to this world, prepared me very early to think about my future and not to blame anyone but move on positively turning any negativity to a plus. I have been living by those values. The second person is Shon G, a KZN rapper from South Coast. After I heard him rap for the first time, I took a pen and wrote my first rhyme and lastly the “STREET” and the community I grew up in. Tongaat (Newtown) shaped me because I never had a father my whole life. Meaning most of the things men do I learnt in the street.”

Despite all the challenges of balancing a military career and music, Bricka Iphanta has managed to find a rhythm that works for him. He acknowledges the discipline and structure required in the military and applies it to his music career. The South African Military has been supportive of his musical pursuits, granting him the flexibility to pursue both passions. Soldier On A Mission 2.0 encapsulates Bricka Iphanta's mission: "DEFEND & ENTERTAIN." His goal is to become the most influential rapper in the SADC Region's military, using his lyrics to educate, inspire, and motivate his audience.

Take us through your latest project, what it is about, features, producers and all the contributors.

“SOAM (Soldier On A Mission) 2.0 is about a rapper who was born & raised by the township, disciplined by the military. It is my life experiences, lessons, ideas in the townships mixing it with the military way. It is a build up from all previous projects as well as learning from previous mistakes and maintaining my image as a militant from ekasi. All features were well selected to serve a specific purpose for each of the songs with features. Mainstream & underground features namely: Thabza, Manny Yack, F eezy, Gaba, Qcee, PA Fakaloice, Target, the late OKO, 3r Brick, Blanco, Mthinay Tsunam, MenningSon, Young Cannibal & the whole TimeLess Squad. I worked with a lot of producers, because I wanted to fuse a lot of sounds and add military sound effects on them hence I worked with OSKHA, Tekk, 12 Guage, KaliBeats, Target, PA Fakaloice, Saspekt, SpoochyBeats, Loops, Onender Once again, Mbzet, Gang Related 63atz, KayMasta & JahMajor."
