Brexit - what's next for IT and tech in the UK?

I just read the UK's post-Brexit policy, if you have any investment in tech or digital services or are involved in ICT Compliance, then you should read it too.

The Benefits of Brexit: How the UK is taking advantage of leaving the EU January 2022?

  • This is the policy document: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1051323/benefits-of-brexit.pdf
  • Here's the PR: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/prime-minister-pledges-brexit-freedoms-bill-to-cut-eu-red-tape

It smacks of a "see, BREXIT was a good thing" PR campaign, but seems to be backed by a genuine interest in advancing tech and innovation.

They have made rumblings of a "less stringent" version of the GDPR, that should be interesting!

Full disclosure, I only read the Science, Data & Technology section (p.37 - p.65)

This is particularly interesting (to me anyway):

Online Safety Framework & Online Safety Bill (mainly protections for children) : The Bill will usher in a new age of accountability for tech companies and provide the UK with the opportunity to set the global standard for a risk-based, proportionate regulatory framework that protects users online and upholds their right to freedom of expression.

Keywords

Here are some key words that I pulled out that are briefly mentioned in the policy document and (I fell) warrant further investigation:

  1. ‘Brexit Freedoms’ Bill
  2. the UK’s Innovation Strategy -?Quantum, photonics and electronics
  3. the UK's Quantum Strategy
  4. National Quantum Technologies Programme
  5. UK Advanced Research and Invention Agency?
  6. Data adequacy partnerships with Australia, the United States, Singapore and the Republic of Korea, and free zones in the UAE
  7. Digital Economy Agreement between the? UK and Singapore
  8. UK Plan for Digital Regulation - taking a pro-innovation approach
  9. The UK’s new pro-competition regime for digital markets
  10. UK’s Artificial Intelligence sector
  11. Digital Economy Agreement with Singapore
  12. UK digital identity and attributes trust framework
  13. ?G7 Digital Trade Principles
  14. Online Safety Bill
  15. Online Safety framework
  16. Cyber security ISO standard for IoT
  17. ?The EU’s proposed Network and Information Systems 2.0
  18. ?Product Security and UK Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill?
