The Brexit Dilemma: No Good Choices

The Brexit Dilemma: No Good Choices

As Brexit looms from next March 2019, the outcome in the current state of UK politics remains a contested guessing game. With Prime Minister May’s so-called Chequers proposal (after her country residence where it was announced) being criticized ab initio by the EU and hammered from the left and the right of her own party, the state of Brexit - and whether a clean and orderly transition can be accomplished remains very much in doubt.

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair provided an incisive analysis recently through his Institute for Global Change, which dissects the problems with the current government proposal and suggests a way forward, one that many businesses in the UK would support regardless of party affiliation. Indeed, as we see it Brexit as currently proposed is a threat to businesses, particularly in the service sector, which is not covered in the government proposal, and therefore the economy and country as a whole, posing long-term risks and immediate economic loss.

The coming months will determine whether a compromise can be reached to avert a ‘crash’ out of the EU, or a postponed Brexit (as many have suggested) or a second referendum, which has growing support.
