If the "Brexit" was a deal...

If the "Brexit" was a deal...

I had a brief conversation with a colleague last week on the subject of the EU. She made an excellent point around attempting to make an informed decision and how politics really does not help you get to the facts (pro and con).

We went on to discuss the analogy with a business merger or acquisition and the lengths you need to take to get that decision right. So if the "exit debate" was a deal we would want to understand the detail produced by an independent due diligence (dd) process. We would want to know that the data that had been examined had undergone a thorough review and with this information, make an informed decision.

If only we could apply the common sense to the referendum. It would have been sensible for the "in" and the "out" camps to have agreed on a scope for a form of  dd and one which the public could have a measure of confidence was accurate. Instead we are left with media interpretations (also often swayed by political bias), short term political gain and personality. That cannot be right in my opinion for such an important decision, the consequences of which, will be felt by many generations.

There are some "independent" reports floating about and yes, it would be VERY difficult to agree and execute such a piece of work but how else we can we be confident around the facts?

So for many of us we will have to establish our own positions from a raft of political nonsense and media noise. I guess it's better that we have that option than a fixed position based on old thinking but it's not ideal.

If only more politicians and civil servants thought in the longer term then we might stand a chance.

Rant over (for now)

I've been banging on on similar lines. I personally don't know enough about all the implications each way to make an informed decision. There are too many agendas at play which makes a referendum dangerous when people vote based on sound bites and knee jerk reactions.

excellent commentary.

I like your thinking here. Putting it in terms of - does the business case stack up would be so much more helpful.

All well and good Charles but hard to make that call without facts in my opinion.
