Brewing the Perfect Shot! My Personal Take-aways in Coffee Photography
As a strategist with personal photography skills, I've come to appreciate the coffeehouse experience as a multi-sensory blend of the scent of freshly ground coffee, friendly conversation, and the soothing sound of porcelain ( and paper :) cups.?
However, small coffee shop owners face the challenge of distilling this rich, atmospheric experience into a two-dimensional platform - Instagram.
Drawing upon my experiences at coffeehouses around the globe, including Kronotrop in Istanbul, BlueBottle in Los Angeles, Sightglass in San Francisco, and CoffeeCompany in Amsterdam, I've discovered how these establishments effectively capture their unique essence through powerful visual storytelling on their Instagram feeds.?
Here, I share these insights and explain how small coffee shop owners can enhance their Instagram presence using these techniques.
Planning a Shoot
Successful photography begins with careful planning. If you're working with a photographer for the first time and have limited experience in this area, it's essential to do your homework. Clearly communicating what you want or don't want before the shoot is far more beneficial than bringing it up after the fact when it might be too late to make changes. After the shoot, some things can't be undone, and having to redo a completed shoot is one of the worst outcomes. Therefore, ensure that you express your expectations clearly before the shoot.
Collaborate with experienced food and beverage stylists and photographers, ensuring fresh ingredients and correct product preparation. After the shoot, verify color accuracy and product appeal. Format images appropriately for your chosen output medium, adhering to best practices like 300 dpi resolution, CMYK color format, and specific file types (.psd, .eps).
Photography Principles
Consistency is crucial. A singular, cohesive style should be maintained throughout the shoot. This style can be enhanced by leveraging natural light, judicious use of negative space, and selective focus to add depth to your images. Use contrasting colors for better subject highlight and a brand-appropriate server for an authentic environment.
Product and Beverage Styling
Products should look as appetizing and handcrafted as possible. Utilize relevant props and human elements subtly and ensure the setting's visual appeal and authenticity. Each beverage type has unique styling attributes. For instance, brewed coffee should look fresh and hot with a just-poured look, complete with bubbles and steam. Lattes should have foam that reflects the drink's color characteristics. Macchiatos should emphasize the espresso shot and caramel crosshatching. Limited-time offerings should focus on toppings and a handcrafted look.
Table Surfaces and Serveware
Table surfaces should be natural, distressed, and unfinished, preferably made of wood or raw steel/aged patina. Avoid laminate and high gloss surfaces, which can distract from the product.
Similarly, your choice of serve ware is crucial. Use branded cups when depicting beverages outside or at home, or when shooting for PR. Use for-here ware for in-store moments. Include your coffee shop packaging when necessary and use clear serve ware to showcase ingredients and textures.
Product Placement
The strategic placement of your product within the frame is crucial to creating an attractive composition. This involves using a similar vantage point and depth of field as the promo image. Ensure the lighting conditions match the image (e.g., dappled light). Align the light angle with the product to create appropriate highlights and shadows.

Hot and Cold Beverage Photography
For hot drinks, use a soft focus for the background, allowing the drinks to show through at the edges while keeping the primary logo in focus. For cold drinks, use ice to create a refreshing look, and ensure the straw is visible. When photographing beverages like Frappuccinos, highlight the toppings, whipped cream, thickness, and iciness.
Food Photography
Effective food photography employs lighting to enhance textures, crops the image in an interesting way, and places props strategically to suggest a larger story. Showcasing the ingredients and using surfaces that highlight the food can further enhance its appeal. The environment should also allude to the time of day, creating a context that enhances the viewer's connection to the product.
Avoidances
While there are numerous techniques and guidelines to follow for successful product photography, there are also certain practices to avoid. These include using floods of light, surfaces that blend with products, hands in an unauthentic way, or props that compete with food. Avoid a cluttered, sloppy, sterile, cold, or empty environment. Also, avoid symmetrical cropping, hiding ingredients, and shooting food that appears mass-produced. The images should never appear too staged or artificial.
Techniques to Master
Do's and Don'ts for a Successful Instagram Presence
With the right photography skills and strategies, you can transform your Instagram feed into an engaging visual story of your brand. Your goal is not just to showcase your products, but also to create an experience that invites customers into your space and your community. If executed correctly, these techniques will allow you to encapsulate the essence of your coffeehouse, the warmth of your space, and the uniqueness of your offering in every Instagram post. After all, coffee is about more than just a beverage - it's about connection, community, and shared love for this timeless drink.
