Breathe the Right Way: Unlock the Benefits of Nasal Breathing

Welcome to “Breath Awareness”


Dear “breathers”.

Breathing is the first thing we do when we come into the world and the last before we leave it. And yet, how often do we stop to reflect on our breath? This newsletter was created with the goal of bringing attention back to something essential and, at the same time, often overlooked: the power of our breath.

Every two weeks, we will explore together how breathing can transform from an automatic act into a mindful practice, capable of improving health, the mind, and the quality of life.


The Breath: A Gateway to Well-Being

Imagine your breath as a gateway. On one side, the external world: stress, commitments, distractions. On the other, the internal world: calm, clarity, balance. When breathing is shallow and erratic, that gateway closes, leaving us overwhelmed. But when breathing is slow and deep, the gateway opens, connecting us to our center.

The good news? It doesn’t take much to open that gateway—just awareness.


Nasal Breathing: Why It Matters

Did you know that the way you breathe can determine how you feel? Breathing through the nose is a natural practice, yet many people have lost this habit, favoring mouth breathing instead. Here’s why we should return to nasal breathing:

? Air filtration: The nostrils trap dust, bacteria, and allergens.

? Nitric oxide: Nasal breathing stimulates the production of this essential molecule, which improves circulation and strengthens the immune system.

? Respiratory efficiency: Nasal breathing is slower and more controlled, improving oxygen exchange and reducing stress on the body.

A small change can have a big impact: starting to breathe through the nose means improving the quality of our lives, one breath at a time.


Practical Technique: Rediscovering Nasal Breathing

I propose a simple yet powerful exercise to get started:

1. Find your space: Sit comfortably or lie down in a quiet place.

2. Close your mouth: Breathe only through your nose without forcing the rhythm.

3. Become aware: Listen to the air as it enters and exits. Is it cool as it enters? Warm as it exits?

4. Add a rhythm: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 2 seconds, and exhale for 6 seconds.

Try this exercise for 5 minutes every day for a week. Write down how you feel: do you notice changes in energy, focus, or calmness?


The Breath as a Daily Tool

Nasal breathing is not just a meditative practice; it’s a tool to integrate into daily life. Try breathing only through your nose:

? While walking.

? During a conversation.

? While reading this newsletter.

Each time you notice yourself breathing through your mouth, pause and return to your nose. Over time, it will become natural.
