Breath, Mood & Money - How they are actually connected, but nobody is talking about it...

Let’s be real: when was the last time you thought about the way you breathe while dealing with your bank account?

If your answer is somewhere between "never" and "what the heck are you on about?"—stick with me.

I promise, this isn’t some woo-woo, crystals-in-your-wallet situation (although, hey, no judgement if that’s your vibe). This is about something much deeper—and more human.

So, grab a cuppa ?, take a deep breath (seriously, do it), and let’s dive in.

Breathing Isn’t Just for Staying Alive ??

Okay, confession time: I’m a bit obsessed with how breathing works. And, yes, I will go on about it for longer than is socially acceptable because it’s just that fascinating.

Here’s the deal: your breath is like nature’s remote control for your body. It doesn’t just keep you alive (which, fair enough, is important). It also plays a sneaky role in how you feel.

When you’re calm, your breathing is slow and steady—like a calm lake at sunrise. But when stress hits? Your breath gets short and shallow, like a bird flapping its wings in a panic.

And financial stress? Oh, mate, that’s a whole other beast.

Money Stress = Messy Breath = Messy Decisions ??

Ever opened a bank statement, felt your stomach drop, and suddenly realised you’re breathing like you’ve just sprinted up a hill? Yeah, same.

That’s your body slipping into fight-or-flight mode. Your nervous system sees those scary overdraft fees or confusing jargon and thinks, “Danger! Must survive!

When that happens, your brain isn’t exactly in “let’s make great decisions” mode. It’s more like, “Just buy the thing and deal with the regret later” or “Ignore it all and hope it goes away.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

The Banking Industry: Stress Machines in Disguise? ??

Here’s where it gets a bit spicy ???.

Banks know stress impacts your decisions. Why else would they use confusing terms, high-pressure sales tactics, and teeny-tiny print you need a magnifying glass to read?

It keeps you overwhelmed. And when you’re overwhelmed, you’re more likely to just go along with whatever they’re offering.

It’s like trying to make a life-changing decision while holding your breath underwater. Not ideal, right?

But Here’s the Hopeful Part ??

You don’t have to stay stuck in this cycle of stress and shallow breathing.

You can press pause. Take a deep breath. (Seriously, do it again. Right now. I’ll wait.)

Learning to breathe intentionally—especially in those high-stress moments—can completely change the way you handle money.

It’s like planting a tree in the middle of a chaotic city. Suddenly, there’s space to think, to see clearly, to choose differently.

Breathe First, Bank Second: Here’s How ???

  1. When you feel the stress rising: Stop. Inhale deeply for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four. Repeat until your heart stops racing.
  2. Before making a big financial decision: Spend a minute focusing on your breathing. It helps you calm the fight-or-flight response and think more clearly.
  3. In the middle of a spending spiral: Pause. Breathe. Ask yourself if this is an emotional purchase or one you’ll still be happy about tomorrow.

It sounds simple (and maybe a little too good to be true), but trust me—it works.

Changing Your Story, One Breath at a Time

Look, I know money stuff is hard. It’s messy, emotional, and deeply personal. And if you’re like me, you’ve probably made a few (okay, maybe more than a few) financial choices you’d rather forget.

But here’s the thing: you’re not broken. You’re human. And with a bit of awareness—and some intentional breathing—you can rewrite your relationship with money.

Because you’re not just at the mercy of your moods, your breath, or your bank. You’re in control, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Let’s Normalise This Chat ??

Here’s my challenge to you:

  • Next time you’re dealing with a money stress moment, notice your breath. Is it steady or shallow?
  • Try one of the breathing practices above and see what changes.
  • Share your experience. Seriously, let’s talk about this stuff. It’s too important to keep buried under shame and silence.

Money, mood, and breath—they’re all connected. And the more we understand that, the more empowered we become to take back control.

You’ve got this. ??

Love this. I find breath work extremely helpful before giving a talk in public, or even prepping for a difficult one-on-one conversation. Good stuff, Tara!
