Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is a condition where the cells in the breast start changing or mutating. The type of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast become cancerous.

?? Statistics:

  • Globally, 2.3 million people receive a breast cancer diagnosis annually.
  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 15% of all new cancer cases (Cancer Research UK).
  • The average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is 13%.

?? Signs to be aware of:

1?? A new lump or thickening in your breast or armpit.?

2?? Any change in the size, shape or feel of your breast.?

3?? Skin changes in the breast, like puckering, dimpling, a rash, or redness.?

4?? Fluid leaking from the nipple in a woman who isn't pregnant or breastfeeding.?

5?? Changes in the position of the nipple, retraction or inversion.

Treating Breast Cancer

Breast radiotherapy is a crucial and often life-saving treatment. At Leo Cancer Care, we are aiming to significantly improve the way patients experience radiotherapy.

Traditionally, patients are in a vulnerable and exposed position during supine or prone treatments. But what if we could change that? We believe that being upright can bring marked improvements to the patient journey.

So why treat breast cancer patients in upright?

?? Empowerment and Connection: Being upright means patients can connect with their therapists eye to eye and feel more empowered.?

?? Health Benefits: Research shows that lung volumes are larger when you're upright. This can lead to better protection of vital organs like the lungs and heart during treatment.

?? Proton Therapy for All: We hope to make proton therapy accessible to more patients by embracing upright radiotherapy.?

?? Enhancing Accessibility: Patients often experience limited arm mobility following breast cancer surgery, so being able to receive radiotherapy with your arms down may improve accessibility.

Ongoing Research at Leo Cancer Care

Research has not only demonstrated the feasibility of treating breast cancer in an upright position, but has also revealed that some patients might actually find this position more comfortable. In this study, 16 volunteers aged 34-90 participated, with nine of them having prior experience with conventional supine radiotherapy for breast cancer. What a Breast Cancer Radiotherapy Treatment Could Look Like in Our Upright Solution Named, Marie?

In this video, you'll see how a breast cancer patient is set up in Marie? (our upright particle therapy solution), rotated and scanned. A CQ Medical? Monarch Overhead Arm Positioner is attached to move the arms up and a Support4All bra can be seen, to support the breasts and ensure each treatment is reproducible.
