Breaking up with Dynamics 365 GP
It is time to move on from Microsoft Dynamics 365 GP (Great Plains) and transition to Microsoft Dynamics 365 BC.?There I said it. ??For 24 years I have supported GP, implemented GP, trained people on GP, sold GP, developed products for GP and built a successful business around GP. GP has been very good to me and eOne as a company.??But we are breaking up and you should be planning your divorce also.
Do you have to break up??Absolutely not. ?
Should you break up? Yes
Sometimes a relationship seems to be cruising along great, until one day you realize you are unhappy. When you think about it, you realize that you have lost sight of your goals, you have stopped striving for them, and the reason is that the other party in your relationship is holding you back. For a while you hope your partner will change.?Then you realize that there is no change in sight, they are not getting on board with your growth, and it is simply time to move on. That’s where you are with Dynamics GP. Microsoft are not making it better. It will not support the growth you need and the direction you are heading.?Don’t let this linger as it only gets harder. It is time to make the hard call and end this relationship.
But I need to be in an ERP relationship. Yes, you absolutely need to have an ERP by your side. Fortunately, GP has a better looking, much more progressive and forward-looking twin. ?Microsoft Dynamics 365 BC is your answer. ?I was skeptical for many years about Microsoft’s efforts with BC, partly because I was happy in my relationship with GP, but BC’s time has come, and it is more than ready to be your next ERP partner.?It is everything you have been looking for to support your dreams and long-term goals for the next 20 years.
How do I move on? You need to see a counselor.?Someone that has been through this many times before and can help you through the difficult transition. It will be hard times, but the reward will be well worth the pain. ?Go and talk to your Microsoft ERP partner about BC, and if they are not willing to help you - then simply find a partner that will.?You can not let your partner hold you back.
Your partner will show you that moving to BC is the right thing for you. They will show you all the benefits and how your business can leverage BC and Microsoft’s cloud - ??to better support the goals of your business.
But I have so many memories – and a lot of data I can not leave behind. This can be an amicable break up and you do not need to lose all those good memories.?On the other hand, you do not want to burden this relationship with all your thoughts and memories about your ex-ERP. ?Your lawyer will tell you that it is a requirement to keep those memories for seven years - so how do you move forward and yet keep all that history at hand?
For this you need a specialist – and that specialist is eOne. We know GP backwards – and we know BC forwards.?We put our heads together and come up with a plan to solve this problem for you. ??We have developed a one-click solution that does the following:
1.??????Moves the data (memories) you need to keep into an Azure data lake
2.??????Let’s you access all those memories (data) from within Business Central
3.??????Displays the data where you need it, in the new BC SmartList (aka Popdock).

What makes this so cool is:
1.??????It is blazing fast
2.??????It does not increase cloud storage costs
3.??????Your new ERP will never know that you have kept all your old memories, but you can access them anytime you need to
4.??????You can even mash up your old memories (data) with your new ones – into a single set of data – but you can always see which relationship that memory came from.
??Conclusion
I know it is hard and I appreciate the pain you will go through. It will hurt some days. You need to set yourself free and ensure that you and your company live your very best life. ?
Disclaimer: I am very happily married and this article really is all about why you should move from Great Plains (GP) to Business Central (BC)

1 年Well said sir, Its crazy case I still love GP but I also understand the need to move away from it. I'll see yo on the BC side one of these days!!

2 年Just embraked on this very process... was told reporting option in BC not as good as smartlist in GP, but everyhting else should improve. I like that we should be able to minimise additional software (good bye extender - but thanks Eone for the many years of Extender). However moving over 7 years of data sounds complicated and I believe we're running GP in parallel to BC so we can still access historical records. Azure Data Lake sounds interesting...
Pleased to report I am now working again.
2 年I moved on from GP to Acumatica an am delighted with my decision. Miss seeing you Martin. You've always been an inspiration for me.

2 年Well written and amusing article. Very true too, GP has been left in BC's dust.
