It goes without saying that LinkedIn is the world's biggest business to business networking platform. There are currently approximately 766 million users (as of 10th March 2020), of which 46% of them are monthly active users. That is a lot of people worldwide.
LinkedIn is no longer just a tool used by recruiters and those looking for work. It is an exceptionally powerful tool that can instantly connect you with decision-makers. That's right decision-makers you want (and need) to talk to. In my experience of using it over the last few years, people a nice, people genuinely want to help. The question to ask "who do you know who..." can normally get you to the right person if you haven't already found them!
To use LinkedIn effectively you have to have a clear idea WHO and WHY you want to connect with people - this is because there are so many people out there that you must narrow down your search criteria. You can't be connected to all 766 million users!
Having a clear of idea of who and why makes using LinkedIn as simple as ABC, let me explain
ATTRACT
You attract the right people to connect with you by:
- Having a complete profile that is written to attract your target audience
- Have engagement content that will interest your target audience
- Have a network which will attract your target audience to want to be part of it.
The key is "TARGET AUDIENCE" - the WHO you want to connect with!
next comes
BUILD
Here you build your network carefully. Spend time connecting with people whom YOU want to connect with. Think about this carefully because there are a lot of people on LinkedIn. Best not to connect with just anybody, but those who are either in the sector you want to be in or who might work with people you want to connect with.
I don't just connect with anybody! Again the main thing here is to think about your Target Audience, where they will work, what they job title or location maybe be etc. The more information you can consider, the better your search criteria.
Tip - if you are on a networking event, aim to find and connect with people on the same event. Message them, they like it! That way you have access to their network as well.
Last but not least be CONSISTENT
You do not have to post three times a day for months to build a really good network, you just have to be consistent and regular. Consider having engaging content - not wall to wall business, but a mixture of funny, thoughtful or business-related. Anything that you think might interest your Target Audience (that term again).
Posting regularly probably means at least three times a week, you can prepare your posts in advance and just pop them in when you are ready. Or write something on the spur of the moment, it doesn't matter. They also DO NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT. The imperfect post is much better than the perfect post that was never shared! Just do it
FINALLY... get a little help from your friends. Get friends to like, comment etc your posts. At the Business Academy, we have our own Business Academy Posting Support group so that everybody has instance support for their posts. This really works. Find one or come and see ours. Remember breaking through and actually reaching decision-makers with LinkedIn is easy, building a network is easy. We have got tenants, investors, deals, SA customers - all sorts from our network and only because we followed the ABC of LinkedIn.

4 年Great article Beverley, all the best
Promoting businesses to their potential customers using content and SEO for less than the cost of a coffee a day
4 年You're spot on. Building your network and the relationship with the people you connect to is key. As with everything, consistency is also a factor and people will engage if you post interesting content that they feel able to respond to
